Role Description

We are looking for an innovative Country Lead for a maternity leave cover who is passionate about tackling climate change and making a meaningful impact. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a genuine interest in Senegal and the broader African political, economic, and environmental landscape to join a talented team and help advance sustainable development, accelerate the clean energy transition, and promote climate justice.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of climate-related narratives across national, regional, and global media, along with the ability to shape and drive country-level strategy while contributing to broader regional initiatives across Francophone Africa.

As Country Lead, you will coordinate and guide our work in Senegal, helping to set priorities, strengthen partnerships, and ensure the successful delivery of country-level activities. You will work closely with local partners and connect them with a regional and international network of communications experts, fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and alignment across initiatives. This role is well suited to someone who enjoys bringing people together, building momentum, and creating the conditions for impactful work to progress.

How you'll contribute

  • Balance national priorities with regional goals, ensuring country-level work contributes to and strengthens broader strategic objectives across Africa.
  • Collaborate with Country Leads and regional colleagues to design and deliver integrated, cross-country campaigns that maximise collective impact and knowledge sharing.
  • Build, maintain, and strengthen trusted relationships with senior government representatives, media, civil society organisations, and strategic partners to advance organisational priorities.
  • Gather, analyse, and share high-quality strategic intelligence to inform decision-making, identify opportunities, and strengthen campaign planning across the network.
  • Coordinate and drive integrated communications and advocacy campaigns from planning through to delivery, ensuring activities contribute to measurable outcomes and long-term impact.
  • Monitor the political, media, and stakeholder landscape to identify emerging risks, trends, and opportunities, translating insights into strategic recommendations and campaign actions.
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team culture by supporting the development of colleagues, encouraging continuous learning, and enabling the team to deliver high-quality work.
  • Promote a results-focused approach by evaluating success through meaningful outcomes, influence, and impact, while continuously adapting strategies based on evidence and learning.

Qualifications

  • Fluency in written and spoken English; additional languages are an asset.
  • A genuine interest in the mission and values of the organisation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and professional experience in the fields of strategic communications, political campaigning and/or journalism.
  • A solid understanding of the political and media landscape in Senegal and across Francophone Africa.
  • A sound network of active contacts relevant to the role, with a proven track record of building media contacts.
  • Ability to assess a changing landscape and develop a strategic vision, identifying the most crucial intervention points that add value to the overall discourse.
  • Experience in managing teams and projects.
  • Track record delivering effective communications strategies on complex issues.
  • Highly diplomatic with an ability to liaise and negotiate with a wide range of stakeholders, including experts, funders, and civil society.
  • Ability to track a range of relevant and complex issues.
  • Excellent time and priority management, high level of self-motivation, independence and can-do mentality, good team-player with a passion for excellence.
  • Outstanding English language skills, with a track record of producing engaging and impactful communications materials, including fundraising proposals, reporting, and communications strategies. Other languages are an asset.
  • The disposition to work generously with colleagues in a high-trust global community of peers.
  • The strong multi-disciplinary skillset necessary to flourish in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment and work nimbly across phone/video conferencing, time zones, slack, email, etc.
  • The versatile and adaptable skills necessary to flourish in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment and work across time zones using tools such as Zoom, Slack and email (Google Workspace).
  • A commitment to an inclusive and empowering approach to facing climate change.

Benefits

  • 6 offline days (with no calls or meetings) per year to focus on your work.
  • Reduced working time on Fridays during the Dry Season (summer).
  • Access to our employee assistance program to support your mental health and personal development.
  • Supplementary paid business closure for end-of-year holidays.
  • Maternity leave matched to 20 weeks for countries where regulation allows less than that.
