Role Description

BnM is currently seeking a motivated and experienced Carbon Instrumentation Specialist to join our team in Newbridge on a two-year fixed-term, full-time basis. The successful candidate will join the Carbon Research team and support the monitoring and verification of carbon dynamics across PCAS bog sites. This role involves the installation, operation, maintenance and calibration of carbon monitoring equipment, including:

  • Eddy covariance towers
  • Chamber systems
  • Flumes
  • DOC sensors
  • Power banks
  • Solar arrays

The role will support chamber measurements, data management, time series and geospatial analysis, and the development of standard operating procedures and QA/QC processes. The successful candidate will also work closely with suppliers and technical support providers, assist with equipment procurement, and manage large environmental datasets.

The main duties and responsibilities of the role will include the following:

  • Maintain field equipment, clean sensors, troubleshoot technical and IT issues, and occasionally collect soil and water samples and soil cores.
  • Conduct carbon monitoring across a range of bogs under the PCAS scheme, including travel to and from bog sites, the collection of greenhouse gas measurements, and assistance with the calibration and maintenance of carbon flux chambers.
  • Assist with the calibration and maintenance of equipment used to measure hydro-meteorological variables, including regular site visits, equipment inspections and working with third-party suppliers.
  • Carry out soil and water sampling, including using a peat auger to sample peat, storing and delivering samples to laboratories, and carrying out spot sampling of peat drains where required.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations to meet reporting requirements under PCAS.
  • Assist with time series, statistical and geospatial analysis, using Excel or, preferably, R statistical software or Python to analyse carbon fluxes across PCAS sites.
  • Provide information and assistance as required for the company to fulfil its statutory and legal reporting obligations, including AERs, and to support the communication and agreement of bog rehabilitation plans with the Environmental Protection Agency.

  • Proactively participate in the Performance Management process to ensure delivery of own, and the wider team's objectives.

Qualifications

  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as data analysis and coding platforms.
  • Experience using R, ArcGIS and remote sensing is desirable.
  • A full driving licence is essential due to regular travel to field sites.
  • A Level 8 or higher qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management or a related scientific subject, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in Excel and coding is required.
  • Experience or knowledge in Environmental Management and Spatial Analysis.
  • At least two years' experience in a similar technical role.
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills.
