[Hiring] Black Organizing Program Organizer @Planned Parenthood of Michigan

Role Description

The Black Organizing program is Planned Parenthood’s national effort to work with the Black community on fights for reproductive health, sex education, and access to care. The Black Organizing Program (BOP) Organizer is primarily responsible for:

• Working in close coordination with Planned Parenthood’s national organizing team.
• Engaging and growing a base of Black supporters.
• Building power for the reproductive health movement in the Black community.
• Developing and executing campaign plans in their assigned area.
• Using local campaigns/initiatives to deepen Black engagement.
• Building, implementing, and executing field organizing and education programs.

Essential Functions:

• Demonstrate a commitment to race equity.

External Relations & Volunteer Engagement:

• Significant contact with the public as the face of PPMI and PPAM in local communities.
• Identifying tabling, volunteer recruitment, public speaking, and visibility opportunities.
• Directing activities of supporters and volunteers.
• Building initiatives to recruit and increase participation of Black supporters, volunteers, and activists.
• Maintaining relationships with vendors.
• Developing training and training materials.
• Interpreting and recommending changes to departmental policies.
• Recruiting, developing, and mobilizing volunteers for sexual and reproductive healthcare.
• Working closely with the Government Relations Director.
• Supporting electoral initiatives through Michigan Planned Parenthood Votes Super PAC.
• Participating in large-scale advocacy initiatives.

Cross-functional Collaboration:

• Building relationships with partner organizations.
• Engaging and growing a base of Black supporters.
• Aligning program goals with national and state goals.
• Serving as a liaison to PPFA and other partner organizations.
• Collaborating with Field and Outreach teams.
• Providing onboarding and support for staff.
• Working with Government Relations team.
• Maintaining currency in current legislative and electoral news.

Needs Assessments, Metrics, and Reporting:

• Implementing data collection tools to assess needs of constituency groups.
• Building capacity for statewide supporters and Membership lists.
• Managing, tracking, and reporting on grants.
• Developing measures of success and monitoring metrics.
• Reviewing progress of assignments with management.

Qualifications

• Two to five years of relevant experience in Community or Field Organizing, Political Science, Social Justice, and/or Community Engagement work, or related fields.
• Any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by hiring decision makers.

Requirements

• Intermediate concepts, practices, and procedures used in community outreach activities.
• Intermediate knowledge of political issues impacting the organization’s mission.
• Intermediate knowledge of reproductive health issues.
• Advanced knowledge of the reproductive justice framework and feminist principles.
• Intermediate project management skills.
• Data gathering and analytic techniques.
• Intermediate meeting facilitation and process management.
