Role Description

The Biofeedback Intervention Technology for Speech lab at NYU (BITS Lab), directed by Dr. Tara McAllister, has an opening for a full-time Postdoctoral Associate. BITS lab conducts research at the intersection of experimental phonetics and speech pathology, with a focus on how technology can enhance the acquisition of new speech skills.

  • The postdoc will contribute to a new project developing and testing real-time acoustic biofeedback for sibilant distortions in adolescents with severe jaw misalignment (dentofacial disharmony).
  • Depending on the candidate's background, the role may emphasize:
    • Clinical research activities (study design, data collection and acoustic analysis, and manuscript preparation)
    • Technical research activities (collaborative development of acoustic visualization tools, signal processing research, and prototype evaluation)
    • Both clinical and technical research activities.
  • The postdoc will supervise students in the lab in data processing or quality assurance activities.
  • There is an option for this position to be mostly remote for U.S.-based candidates (Eastern or Central time zone), in addition to the option of working fully onsite.
  • The postdoc will receive training in research as well as in professional development skills that will support advancement to the next career stage.
  • The position will begin in summer or fall 2026. The initial appointment will be for one year, with possible renewal for an additional year.
  • In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $65,000 - $70,000.

Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in communication sciences and disorders, speech/hearing science, linguistics, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.

Requirements

  • Preferred candidates with a clinical or research background in speech sound disorders, acoustic phonetics, or speech-language pathology (including those with clinical certification).
  • Preferred candidates with expertise in digital signal processing, audio engineering, or acoustic visualization, with demonstrated experience working with speech data.
  • Candidates whose background bridges both clinical and technical areas are especially welcome.
