Beacon Biosignals is on a mission to revolutionize precision medicine for the brain. We are the leading at-home EEG platform supporting clinical development of novel therapeutics for neurological, psychiatric, and sleep disorders. Our FDA 510(k)-cleared Dreem EEG headband and AI algorithms enable quantitative biomarker discovery and implementation. Beacon’s Clinico-EEG database contains EEG data from nearly 100,000 patients, and our cloud-native analytics platform powers large-scale RWD/RWE retrospective and predictive studies. Beacon Biosignals is changing the way that patients are treated for any disorder that affects brain physiology. 

Beacon Biosignals is seeking a Senior Manager, Engineering to manage our Datastore team. The Beacon Datastore is the heart of Beacon's platform, encompassing our foundational data model and serving as the centralized data repository and API for Beacon's brain data collection and analytical tools, services, and applications.

In this role, you'll manage 5-7 engineers and will be responsible for the continued development and success of your team and its products. This role reports directly to Beacon's VP of Platform.

What success looks like:
  • Manage 5-7 engineers on Beacon's Datastore Team, coaching them to pursue opportunities to grow their impact at Beacon, and guiding them to overcome challenges along their journey.
  • Develop and share a deep understanding of the Datastore Team's activity and products to facilitate continuous improvement of the team's internal processes and integration with Beacon as a whole.
  • Cultivate an environment where engineers are empowered to learn constantly and collaboratively and treat setbacks as opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Act as a steward of Beacon's engineering practices and maintain high bars for engineering quality, productivity, and accountability while motivating the team to continuously raise those bars over time.
  • Help your team scope out and prioritize tactical week-to-week work in direct connection with Beacon's wider strategic initiatives.
  • Ensure your team's development roadmap is outcome-oriented, up-to-date, aligned with the company's objectives and other teams' priorities, and communicated effectively to other stakeholders within Beacon.
  • Own project management responsibilities for team initiatives, including defining scope, managing timelines, and ensuring expectations are set both internally and externally.

  • You've directly managed mid-sized software engineering teams that have tackled big problems, and can speak to the underlying processes that drove failures and successes encountered by the team along the way.
  • You love seeing teams level up. You're dedicated to helping direct reports overcome challenges and seize opportunities that are crucial to self-growth.
  • Information-gathering is ingrained in every aspect of your work. Your decisions incorporate feedback from stakeholders, your reports, collaborators, and historical context that you intentionally mine from the project over time.
  • You demonstrate a bias towards simplicity, avoid misallocating complexity, and try to impose structure at the right time - not too early or too late.
  • You're painfully aware of the perils of both under- and over-planning. You have a solid handle on the planning horizon of any given project, as well as the corresponding inevitable estimation accuracy dropoff over time. You work to extend that horizon as the project matures.
  • Once you've made a decision, you communicate and follow through with it. You swiftly communicate any dynamic changes with collaborators and stakeholders.
  • Your work empowers the decision-making abilities of your reports, collaborators, and stakeholders.
  • You have a keen sense for the bandwidth limitations, technical debt, and non-iterative processes that drag a project down, and you've employed effective strategies for preventing/remedying these issues in the past.
  • You've worked in a regulated industry before, and have successfully navigated the tension between fast-paced agile development and strict design controls.
    • The base salary range for this role is determined based on past experience, specific skills and qualifications. The base salary is one component of the total compensation package, which includes equity, PTO and other benefits.
