[Hiring] Staff Software Engineer @GitHub, Inc.

Role Description

GitHub Actions powers automation for millions of developers worldwide, processing billions of CI/CD jobs monthly. Our team owns the macOS platform within Actions, working across cloud infrastructure, networking, security, and distributed systems to deliver a reliable and performant experience for developers. We’re looking for a hands-on Staff Software Engineer to set technical direction for the macOS platform, lead cross-team efforts, and raise the bar on scalability, reliability, and operational excellence at scale.

• Identify the highest-leverage problems and drive alignment across stakeholders.
• Guide design and execution from early architecture through rollout and long-term operational ownership.
• Participate in observability, incident response readiness, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and ship high-quality technical solutions that scale across multiple GitHub services.
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, pairing opportunities, and code reviews.
• Own and advocate for the health and quality of the systems that the team builds.
• Write architecture briefs and proposals and carry out code experiments.
• Design and implement APIs for seamless integration between software components.
• Utilize CI/CD tools to set up automated pipelines for continuous integration and delivery.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams and lead discussions for technical solutions.
• Create and guide others in developing clear testing plans, defining success metrics, and integrating customer feedback.
• Maintain executional and operational excellence within and across teams/organizations.
• Apply debugging tools and telemetry to verify assumptions and optimize code performance.
• Drive and support technical roadmap that aligns with product goals.

Qualifications

• 9+ years experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
• OR Associate’s Degree in a related field AND 8+ years experience.
• OR Bachelor's Degree in a related field AND 7+ years experience.
• OR Master's Degree in a related field AND 5+ years experience.
• OR Doctorate in a related field AND 3+ years experience.
• OR equivalent experience.
• Willingness and ability to participate in a rotating on-call schedule, providing 24/7 coverage for 1 week every 2.5 months.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in one or more scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python).
• Experience with technologies and software platforms (e.g., Ruby, React, Go, Javascript/typescript, MySQL, cosmosDB, Elasticsearch).
• Experience with front-end frameworks (e.g., React.js) and telemetry dashboards (e.g., Datadog, Sentry).
• Experience with cloud environments and/or Cloud Native Compute Foundation (CNCF) concepts.
• Demonstrated experience with large-scale system architecture and design in cloud-based environments.
• Experience building or operating CI/CD systems at scale.
• Experience developing on MacOS or iOS platforms.
• Experience working closely with product management, design, and other engineering teams.

Compensation Range

The base salary range for this job is USD $140,400.00 - USD $372,300.00 /Yr. Individual base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
