[Hiring] Staff Software Engineer @Checkmk GmbH

Role Description

As a Staff Software Engineer (m/f/d), you hold one of the most senior technical positions in the engineering organisation. You are accountable for the long-term health and direction of our architecture. Your decisions directly influence how the entire organisation builds and ships software.

Your first major assignment is to lead the decoupling of our UI from its underlying web technology stack and the business logic it sits on top of.

• Derive key architectural pain points from codebase analysis, incident patterns, developer friction, and business direction.
• Create clear priorities and actionable plans to address those pain points, with defined milestones and success criteria.
• Follow through on those plans until final delivery, coordinating work across multiple teams where necessary.
• Define and communicate the architectural vision for significant parts of the codebase.
• Anticipate future technological shifts and position the organisation to respond early.
• Present architecture reviews and contribute to tech strategy documents that inform leadership decisions.

Qualifications

• Extensive track record in software engineering, with demonstrable experience owning and delivering complex, cross-team architectural initiatives.
• Deep architectural expertise: assess a large, mature codebase, identify systemic issues, and build a credible plan to resolve them.
• Subject matter expertise across multiple technical domains.
• Proven ability to influence without authority.
• Strong hands-on skills: lead by example and remain close enough to the code.
• Experience in defining engineering standards, best practices, and architectural guidelines.
• Track record of mentoring senior engineers and elevating team performance.
• Excellent communication skills, able to present technical vision and trade-offs.
• Business fluent in English; German language skills or willingness to learn are a plus.
• Degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

• Lead cross-functional efforts to deliver high-impact projects.
• Sponsor roadmap initiatives and actively invest in derisking.
• Balance long-term strategic work with day-to-day execution.
• Weigh the pros and cons of technical decisions with explicit regard to business goals.
