Role Description

The Sr. Director of Cloud Engineering will lead cloud engineering and enterprise architecture across Johnson Controls’ Security organization. This role combines deep technical expertise with organizational leadership, managing engineering teams and owning delivery of cloud platforms, shared services, and AI-enabled capabilities that support multiple product lines.

Responsibilities

• Strategic Leadership
  • Define and execute the cloud engineering and enterprise architecture strategy across Security.
  • Establish a shared technical direction spanning cloud services, AI integration, data, APIs, identity, and connectivity.
  • Identify opportunities to consolidate overlapping capabilities.
  • Partner with product-line leaders to establish clear ownership and prioritize shared engineering investments.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and guide investment decisions.
• Engineering Organization Leadership
  • Lead distributed engineering teams responsible for cloud platforms globally.
  • Establish clear responsibilities and collaboration practices.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain engineering talent.
  • Manage staffing, capacity planning, and engineering budgets.
  • Build a culture of customer focus and continuous improvement.
• Delivery and Engineering Execution
  • Own delivery, quality, and technical outcomes for cloud capabilities.
  • Translate strategic priorities into achievable plans.
  • Partner with Program Management to coordinate releases.
  • Establish measures of delivery predictability and service reliability.
  • Drive improvements in development and release practices.
• Enterprise Architecture and Technical Leadership
  • Own architecture standards and governance across Security.
  • Guide critical design decisions involving scalability and performance.
  • Lead architecture reviews and ensure significant technical decisions include clear alternatives.
  • Maintain hands-on technical involvement through design reviews.
• AI Architecture and Integration
  • Lead the architecture and engineering integration of AI-enabled capabilities.
  • Establish the services, data flows, and deployment patterns for AI capabilities.
  • Define evaluation and monitoring approaches for AI solutions.
  • Embed data privacy and security into AI-enabled solutions.
• Security and Operational Excellence
  • Establish engineering practices that embed cybersecurity into cloud solutions.
  • Partner with Cybersecurity and product teams to address security requirements.
  • Ensure operational readiness of delivered services.
  • Manage cloud and AI cost efficiency through architecture choices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• 12+ years of software engineering experience.
• 5+ years leading engineering teams.
• Demonstrated experience leading engineering managers and globally distributed technical teams.
• Proven accountability for delivery and quality for commercial software platforms.
• Experience leading technical strategy across multiple product lines.
• Demonstrated experience architecting production SaaS platforms.
• Deep expertise in a major public cloud platform.
• Practical experience integrating AI capabilities into production software.
• Strong understanding of APIs, event-driven systems, and CI/CD.
• Experience designing secure systems.
• Ability to produce working prototypes and influence technical decisions.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree (MS, MBA, or PhD) in a relevant technical or business discipline.
• Experience with Microsoft Azure.
• Background in physical security, video management, or IoT.
• Experience with video processing or edge AI deployment.
• Experience with generative AI applications.
• Success modernizing established products.
• Experience collaborating with globally distributed engineering teams.
• Relevant cloud architecture certification.

Benefits

• HIRING SALARY RANGE: $170 - 240,000.
