[Hiring] Software Engineer, Infrastructure - Self Managed Experience @Camunda

Role Description

We're hiring for Self-Managed Experience (SMX) — the team responsible for making Camunda 8 deployable in a self-service way for customers who run their own infrastructure. SMX covers two areas of work: installation artifacts (Helm chart, Docker Compose, C8Run) and reference architectures & cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Azure).

This role sits primarily on the installation artifacts side — building, maintaining, and releasing the artifacts that ship Camunda 8 to every self-managed customer. You'll be fully embedded in that area day-to-day, but you'll work alongside the reference-architecture side of the team regularly, and SMX is actively working toward enabling every engineer to review and contribute across both stacks over time.

SMX is also shifting from a purely artifact- and ops-focused team toward one in which engineers bring customer judgment and product sense alongside technical depth. That means engaging directly with the teams closest to customers — Support, Consulting, Presales — and using that signal to help shape what we prioritize, not just executing a fully-specced ticket.

You'll find plenty of room to leave your own footprint: deployment automation, software and infrastructure testing, multi-region setups, and developer experience are all live areas of investment as the team matures from "basic install" toward full-lifecycle ownership (upgrades, backup/restore, disaster recovery).

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Build, maintain, and release C8 distribution artifacts for self-managed customers — Helm Charts (Kubernetes), C8Run, and Docker Compose — along with their documentation.
• Improve the reliability and usability of deployment artifacts across the full customer lifecycle: installation, upgrades, and day-2 operations, not just initial deployment.
• Engage directly with internal customer-facing teams (Support, Consulting, Presales) to understand real deployment problems, and use that signal to help shape what gets prioritized — not just how it gets built.
• Collaborate with Development Teams, Product Management, QA, and Documentation to ship integrated, tested, and documented releases.
• Take part in the team's shared medic rotation and resolve engineering-level support cases, feeding learnings back into development.
• Contribute to the shared tooling (review, deployment, and test tooling) that SMX is building so other Camunda teams can adopt it.

What success looks like (first ~3 months):

• Taken on your first medic rotation slot and support tickets to understand the stack, customer challenges, and deployment environments.
• Improved onboarding or documentation, turning your own ramp-up experience into concrete improvements.
• Contributed to artifact fixes, CI/CD enhancements, or test automation that strengthens release quality.
• Deliver structural improvement initiatives — a feature request, or a test/release improvement.
• Built working relationships with engineering, QA, and product peers, and started building context on the reference-architecture side of the team.
• Started forming your own view of a customer pain point from firsthand signal (support tickets, consulting feedback), not just from a ticket description.

Qualifications

• Ability and/or willingness to use our product, with genuine curiosity about the customer problem behind a ticket.
• Strong expertise in building, operating, and maintaining Helm Charts; deploying applications on Kubernetes; implementing CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions; and managing infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform).
• Ability to create clear technical documentation and communicate effectively across teams.
• A pragmatic and autonomous approach to programming and problem-solving.
• You thrive as a manager of one — you build it, you own it — and take pride in delivering maintainable, operable software.

Nice-to-haves:

• Experience running and operating on-prem/self-hosted software on Docker.
• Familiarity with Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, or similar observability tools.
• Working knowledge of the Go programming language.
• Exposure to cloud infrastructure/IaC (Terraform, Crossplane).
