Role Description

As a Senior II Software Engineer in the D2C Domain at World of Books, you will be a key technical contributor, responsible for designing systems and ensuring the technical quality of your team's area. You will collaborate closely with leadership to translate business goals into sound technical decisions.

What You Will Own

• Technical Ownership & Delivery
  • Own and deliver projects in service of quarterly domain goals.
  • Independently carry out research, analysis, design, development, testing, release, and ongoing maintenance for software solutions.
  • Take ownership of individual sub-workstreams and represent the technical side of assigned projects.
  • Balance technical excellence with business outcomes.
• Software & Architecture Design
  • Design clean, well-structured systems across service and API boundaries.
  • Own the architecture for your team's area, ensuring designs align with wider technical direction.
  • Contribute to the design and programming of databases.
  • Identify and communicate architectural improvement opportunities.
• AI-Native Engineering
  • Use unattended AI coding agents for end-to-end feature delivery.
  • Contribute to and help implement your squad's agentic development strategy.
  • Apply strong context engineering and prompting practice.
• Reliability, Quality & Support
  • Maintain the team's list of reliability improvements.
  • Own key monitoring dashboards and alerts for your team's services.
  • Ensure compliance with World of Books's security standards.
  • Lead the response to larger incidents in your area.
  • Test all code produced and resolve root causes of issues.
• People, Collaboration & Team Contribution
  • Mentor engineers earlier in their careers.
  • Put forward recommendations on team composition.
  • Act as a proactive and collaborative member of the squad.
  • Communicate with clarity and influence stakeholders.
  • Participate fully in team and individual meetings.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Deep proficiency in at least one of Java/Spring Boot, Next.js/React, or Kotlin/Swift.
• Demonstrated system-level and architectural thinking.
• Confident use of AI coding tools.
• Strong testing discipline and end-to-end ownership of code quality.
• Effective communication in English and Hungarian.
• Working knowledge of database design and programming.
• Ethical, thorough, and dependable working practices.

Requirements

• Experience with eCommerce or consumer-facing platforms.
• Experience mentoring engineers or participating in interview processes.
• Experience owning observability or reliability backlog for a service area.
• Familiarity with architecture decision records and lean engineering processes.
• Track record of helping a team adopt AI-assisted development practices.
