Role Description

Build software that powers safety-critical avionics systems. Open to strong embedded engineers with partial DO-178C experience. Quest Defense Systems & Solutions (QDSS) is seeking an experienced Senior Embedded Software Engineer to develop and support mission-critical airborne software used in advanced avionics systems. In this role, you’ll work across the full software lifecycle—from requirements and design to integration, testing, and certification—helping deliver high-reliability software in a DO-178C environment. You’ll collaborate with systems, hardware, and verification teams to solve complex problems and ensure software performs safely and reliably in real-world conditions.

Location: Remote (U.S.)

Travel: ~10% (Indianapolis, IN)

Clearance: U.S. Citizenship required

What You’ll Do

• Design, develop, and maintain embedded software (C/C++ or Ada) for avionics systems
• Work across the full software lifecycle (requirements → design → code → test → certification)
• Develop software architectures and detailed designs for real-time systems
• Troubleshoot and debug issues across software, hardware, and system integration
• Support DO-178C activities, including documentation, traceability, and reviews
• Partner with verification teams on testing and code coverage (including MC/DC)
• Collaborate with systems, hardware, and certification teams
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to design/code reviews

Qualifications

• 8–15+ years of experience in embedded software development
• Strong programming skills in C, C++, or Ada
• Experience working in real-time or embedded systems (RTOS)
• Experience with software development lifecycle and debugging
• Exposure to DO-178C or other safety-critical standards
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
• U.S. Citizenship required

Nice to Have

• Experience with DO-178C DAL A or certification programs
• Familiarity with avionics systems or aerospace environments
• Experience with tools like DOORS, VectorCast, LDRA, or similar
• Knowledge of avionics data buses (ARINC 429, 664, MIL-STD-1553, AFDX)
• Experience with low-level software (drivers, OS, middleware)
