[Hiring] Principal Software Engineer @Verto Health

Role Description

As Principal Software Engineer, Health Data & Interoperability, you will be the senior technical voice on our engineering team and the owner of the data architecture underneath the product. This is a hands-on role where you'll write code, review others' work, and design the ingestion and transformation processes for healthcare data.

What You'll Do

• Engineering Leadership & R&D
  • Set and hold the code review bar, raising the standard of what ships.
  • Build and drive our AI-assisted development pipeline.
  • Own technical R&D and spikes: evaluate, prove, and bring back usable solutions.
  • Manage technical debt and resilience, including retiring legacy code.
• Data Architecture
  • Own the canonical healthcare data model for patients, encounters, providers, claims, and clinical events.
  • Manage the semantic terminology service and platform APIs.
  • Set standards for data quality, lineage, and standardization.
  • Make data-side calls in the Architecture Review Board.
• Interoperability & Data Pipelines
  • Design the ingestion and ETL for HL7 v2, FHIR, claims, and third-party data.
  • Work with federated query engines and ingestion patterns.
  • Optimize pipelines for throughput, cost, reliability, and latency.
  • Ensure reusable ingestion patterns across clients.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Health Informatics, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 7+ years in software and data engineering, including 4+ years hands-on building and operating production systems.
• Strong current Python and SQL skills, with excellent software engineering craft.
• Hands-on HL7 v2 and FHIR experience with real EHR and claims data.
• Experience designing canonical data models, schemas, and ETL at scale.
• Experience setting and holding a code review bar on a team.
• Hands-on with AI-assisted development tooling.
• Cloud data platform experience, ideally Azure, with knowledge of PHIPA, PIPEDA, or HIPAA.

Requirements

• Experience with interface engines such as Mirth Connect, Rhapsody, or InterSystems.
• Familiarity with clinical terminologies including SNOMED CT, LOINC, and ICD-10.
• Knowledge of the Canadian digital health landscape.
