[Hiring] Magento2 Tech Lead @VPteam

1wk ago - VPteam is hiring a remote Magento2 Tech Lead. πŸ’Έ Salary: unspecified πŸ“Location: Eastern Europe

Role Description

We're bringing in a strong Tech Lead to own the toughest technical problems on the platform β€” deep architecture calls, complex integrations, and anything that needs more bandwidth than day-to-day delivery allows. You'll work side by side with our Team Lead, focusing on the technical side while they focus on people and delivery.

You'll combine deep hands-on Magento 2 engineering with real technical leadership β€” owning architecture decisions, setting the technical bar, and helping the rest of the team level up. You'll have a real say in how things get built, and a direct line into both technical and product challenges.

This is a strong fit for a senior engineer who's ready to step beyond pure execution β€” someone who sees the whole picture, isn't afraid of legacy code, helps people around them grow, and treats AI-assisted development tools as a normal part of the daily workflow, not a novelty.

What you'll do

  • Own technical architecture and design decisions for the platform, balancing pragmatism with long-term maintainability β€” perfect code is not the goal; working software is.
  • Develop and maintain Magento 2 functionality: custom modules, API integrations, admin workflows, and performance improvements.
  • Work with our Python-based microservices β€” integrate with them, extend them when needed, and collaborate on service-level changes.
  • Define and enforce technical standards, code review practices, and quality bar across the team.
  • Conduct code reviews with practical, direct feedback focused on delivery quality, not nitpicking.
  • Support and mentor engineers on the team, helping them make better technical calls on their own.
  • Identify and resolve the complex technical problems that stall with our current setup β€” the ones that need more than a mid-level developer can carry alone.
  • Design and maintain integrations across our stack β€” payments (Stripe), third-party medical and marketing systems, and internal microservices β€” with a clear understanding of security boundaries and authorization.
  • Proactively flag reliability, performance, and developer-experience issues before they become incidents.
  • Collaborate with Product, QA, and DevOps to clarify requirements, validate solutions, and ship smoothly.
  • Communicate technical progress, risks, and decisions clearly to the Team Lead and stakeholders.

Success in this role looks like

  • The backlog of complex, senior-level tasks that used to stall stops piling up.
  • The team ships integrations and features with fewer security or data-handling surprises.
  • Engineers around you are visibly leveling up β€” code reviews teach, not just gatekeep.
  • The Team Lead has a real technical partner to think through hard problems with, not just another pair of hands.

Team & culture

  • The team has been together for years (some for 8-10+), even though this product itself is a young spin-off β€” you're joining an experienced crew, not a green startup team.
  • Direct, no-nonsense communication culture β€” disagreeing with your manager is normal and welcomed, not risky.
  • Scrum/Kanban hybrid workflow, mandatory code review, unit and integration tests, and some QA automation tests that run directly against production to catch real issues early.
  • AI tools are part of daily life here: GitHub Copilot, Gemini Pro, Claude Code, and others β€” used deliberately, not as a crutch.

Hiring process

  • Intro call with a recruiter (30 min).
  • Technical interview with the Team Lead and a Senior Developer (1.5 hours).
  • Final interview with the CTO (45 min - 1 hour).
  • Reference check.
  • Offer.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation based on your experience and skills.
  • Flexible schedule and remote work options.
  • 20 working days of paid vacation per year.
  • 5 paid sick days per year.
  • Conferences, workshops, webinars, and training β€” we invest in your growth.
  • Exposure to a wide variety of technologies and international projects.
  • A team that genuinely values engineering quality, initiative, and smart use of modern AI tools.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of overall software development experience β€” we care more about real seniority than the exact number on paper, so if you're a bit under that but have clearly operated at Tech Lead level, we still want to talk.
  • 3+ years of hands-on Magento 2 experience β€” this one is a hard requirement.
  • Proven experience in a technical leadership role β€” as a Tech Lead, a Senior Engineer driving architecture decisions, or similar. A former title isn't required if you can clearly show you've operated at that level.
  • Strong experience with Magento 2: custom module development, API integrations, admin workflows, and performance considerations.
  • Solid understanding of Magento 2 architecture, extension patterns, and scalability best practices.
  • Strong proficiency in PHP 8+, MySQL, and JavaScript/ES6+.
  • Working knowledge of Python β€” enough to read, debug, and integrate with Python-based services.
  • Proven experience with third-party integrations, including payment systems (e.g. Stripe) or other business-critical services.
  • Experience with caching and scalability tools such as Varnish, Redis, and CDN.
  • Experience with cloud-based deployments and basic infrastructure concepts.
  • Hands-on production experience β€” you understand what breaks in production, how to log it, and how to prevent it, not just how to build features.
  • Product or service company background rather than pure outsourcing β€” you should have actually seen your code run in production and lived with the consequences.
  • Regular hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or similar) as part of your daily workflow.
  • Strong ownership mindset β€” you understand business context, make pragmatic technical calls, and ship reliable solutions.
  • English level: Upper-Intermediate (B2) or higher, comfortable with written communication and technical discussions.
  • Ukrainian language is a must, as most of the tech team comes from Ukraine.

Bonus points

  • Magento certification(s).
  • Experience with AWS services and cloud-based architectures (e.g. Lambda, CloudFormation).
  • Experience with microservices or service-oriented architecture.
  • Experience in healthcare, telehealth, or other regulated domains (e.g. HIPAA) β€” a strong plus, but not required; we just want you to be prepared for how strict the environment is.
  • Experience with subscription or other recurring billing flows.
  • Prior experience leading technical initiatives or mentoring engineers.
