Role Description

The Director of Major Gifts will lead major gifts fundraising at Indivisible to meet ambitious, multi-million dollar annual targets by:

  • Cultivating and stewarding existing major donors
  • Building a pipeline and moves management strategy for solicitations
  • Ensuring high rates of renewals
  • Prospecting new donors

As a member of the department’s leadership team, the Director will play a critical part in:

  • Developing and executing multi-channel fundraising strategies
  • Maintaining a strong, inclusive team culture
  • Fostering a culture of philanthropy across the organization

The Director will join a high-performing, collaborative, and dedicated Development team of 7, tasked with raising $10+ million annually.

Responsibilities

  • Major Gift Fundraising (50%)
    • Lead Indivisible’s major gifts fundraising strategy to cultivate, steward, and grow our portfolio of 200+ donors.
    • Build strong relationships with and lead stewardship for existing major gift donors.
    • Design & implement tailored cultivation and stewardship plans for major donors.
    • Manage donor relationships on behalf of Indivisible’s co-executive Directors and other front-line fundraisers.
    • Develop compelling pitches, case statements, and donor-facing communications.
    • Organize 3-4 donor-facing events annually.
    • Meet aggressive annual goals over $3.5M while maintaining sustainable growth year over year.
  • Prospecting (20%)
    • Drive creative prospecting tactics to research, qualify, and engage new major donor prospects ($2,500+).
    • Manage wealth research platforms.
    • Engage the Board, senior leadership, partner organizations, and other stakeholders to facilitate introductions to new prospects.
  • Strategy (15%)
    • Help develop annual revenue goals; prepare regular reports to the Executive Team and Board on performance.
    • Ensure major gifts fundraising is aligned with Indivisible’s fundraising philosophy.
    • Track successes and challenges of the major gifts program and make recommendations for improving its effectiveness.
    • Prioritize knowledge management, ensuring all major donor data is properly stored and maintained in Salesforce.
  • Team Leadership (10%)
    • Manage two direct reports on the Major Gifts team.
    • Responsible for personnel processes and decisions within the team.
    • Support the development department to continue to build a strong, inclusive team culture.
    • Contribute to a positive organizational culture.
    • Collaborate effectively across departments within the organization.
  • Other (5%)
    • Coordinate closely with the digital team to track, qualify, and upgrade mid-level donors.
    • Occasional travel for in-person meetings as needed.
    • Lead one-off fundraising projects related to major donors.

Qualifications

  • At least 7 years of relevant professional experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in major gifts fundraising, donor relations, or related roles.
  • Experience working with donors in democracy reform, grassroots organizing, civic leadership, and/or progressive political spaces.
  • Superior writing skills for producing compelling donor-facing materials.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organization, project management, and collaboration skills.
  • Previous experience managing a diverse team.
  • Cultural humility and ability to build strong relationships across lines of difference.
  • Fluency in donor management systems and fundraising software.
  • Alignment on the core values and strategy of Indivisible.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working within organizations that have a 501(c)(4), a PAC, and a 501(c)3 strongly preferred.
  • At least 1 cycle of campaign experience in a finance or organizing role strongly preferred.
