Role Description

Within the Department of Medicine at UCSD, the Center on Gender Equity and Health (GEH) focuses on conducting collaborative, action-oriented research to understand and advance gender equity. GEH is a collective of researchers, policy specialists, and development experts, and our strategy focuses on four areas:

The incumbent will be a researcher and technical leader in the field of public health, social epidemiology, demography, or a related field, leading research and evaluation analyses related to family planning (FP) in low- and middle-income countries across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Responsibilities include:

• Analysis of implementing partner datasets
• Leading data quality assessment efforts
• Synthesizing results to generate actionable insights for development programming and investments

The incumbent will possess deep technical knowledge of routine service delivery data including DHIS2 and other family planning program data in low- and middle-income country settings and will lead a workstream aimed at promoting consistent approaches to data quality assessment and correction factors. Responsibilities include:

• Leading data quality assurance studies in collaboration with partners and donors
• Conducting joint analysis with partners, leading to peer-reviewed publications
• Reviewing implementing partner family planning data monitoring plans and making recommendations on how to integrate priority indicators and improve reporting against a common set of metrics
• Providing technical assistance to partners on measurement approaches, indicator definitions, data quality, and use of routine service delivery data
• Leading cross-partner or cross-country synthesis of findings, including identification of trends, lessons learned, and opportunities for adaptation

The incumbent will receive assignments in the form of objectives with goals and the process by which to meet goals, providing direction to staff according to established policies and management guidance. Responsibilities include:

• Organizing and directing research analysis activities and studies
• Serving as an advisor to research professionals
• Providing priority setting and work flow analysis

Qualifications

• Nine years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in a related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly for family planning costing studies and data quality assessment approaches
• Knowledge of family planning indicators and experience applying them in monitoring and evaluation
• Knowledge of routine service delivery data and other family planning program data in low- and middle-income country settings
• Strong knowledge of bio statistical methods
• Solid verbal and written communication skills
• Strong knowledge associated with monitoring staffing levels, recruitment, and training procedures
• Strong knowledge and skills relating to database management and statistical software programming
• Strong organizational skills
