Role Description

Benetech is looking for a Research and Policy Associate to help close the gap in accessible education for students with print disabilities. This role involves translating data, research, and evidence into actionable policy recommendations.

Key Responsibilities

• Support engagement with state education agencies, special education leaders, and disability organizations.
• Help state leaders understand the needs of students with print disabilities.
• Develop state-specific analyses and recommendations.
• Create briefing materials, presentations, and policy summaries for state leaders.
• Support outreach to increase awareness of Bookshare and related resources.
• Assist in incorporating accessible resources into existing policies and guidance.
• Participate in meetings and engagements with state leaders and stakeholders.
• Build relationships with state partners for collaboration.
• Document lessons from state engagement to inform Benetech's strategies.
• Monitor relevant state legislative and regulatory developments.

• Work with the Data Insights team to refine research questions and analytical priorities.
• Help internal teams use data to answer strategic questions regarding accessible education.
• Conduct applied policy research on accessible educational materials and related policies.
• Analyze differences in policy and implementation across states.
• Examine factors affecting student access to services and materials.
• Translate academic research into clear recommendations.
• Produce policy briefs, research reports, and other materials for stakeholders.
• Contribute to frameworks and tools for assessing accessible-education policies.
• Support grant concepts and proposals related to research initiatives.

• Support research concerning federal programs for students with disabilities.
• Demonstrate how accessible resources advance federal educational priorities.
• Contribute to evidence-building efforts documenting unmet needs and implementation challenges.
• Help communicate findings to improve programs and organizational strategy.
• Contribute to international research related to accessible education and disability policy.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in education, public policy, disability studies, or related fields.
• 2-3 years of experience in education, public policy, or disability-related research.
• Demonstrated interest in educational equity and disability policy.
• Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
• Sound judgment and initiative in an entrepreneurial environment.

• Familiarity with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and related policies.
• Experience working with state education agencies and advocacy organizations.
• Experience translating research into policy recommendations and public materials.
• Experience managing grant-funded research projects.
• Interest in comparative approaches to disability rights and inclusive education.
• Intellectual curiosity regarding policy implementation and student experience.

Travel Obligations

Travel for this position may take up to 20%, including company-required meetings.
