Role Description

We are looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join the team working on Caseware IDEA, a mature Windows desktop application used by audit, accounting, and finance professionals around the world. This role is ideal for someone who combines strong quality engineering experience with hands-on automation development skills and the ability to improve how testing is designed, implemented, and integrated into delivery workflows.

  • Support exploratory testing, feature validation, regression testing, release readiness, and investigation of complex product behavior where automation alone is not sufficient.
  • Work with the existing Ranorex-based automation framework while evaluating its limitations.
  • Propose, prototype, and help implement practical alternatives that integrate with our current development and release flows, including GitHub-based collaboration and automation.
  • Manual testing will remain an important part of the role.
  • Strong willingness to learn the IDEA product, customer workflows, and audit concepts over time.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Proven experience as an SDET, Automation QA Engineer, QA Developer, or similar quality engineering role.
  • Strong experience designing, implementing, and maintaining automated tests for complex software products.
  • Experience testing Windows desktop applications.
  • Strong programming or scripting skills, preferably in C#, PowerShell, or Python.
  • Experience with desktop test automation tools such as Ranorex, WinAppDriver, Appium for Windows, or similar technologies.
  • Familiarity with Playwright for modern web test automation is required.
  • Ability to evaluate automation tools and frameworks and recommend pragmatic improvements to an existing automation strategy.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and integrating automated tests into build, validation, and release workflows.
  • Experience working with GitHub or similar source control and collaboration platforms.
  • Mandatory proficiency with AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, and Devin.
  • Strong understanding of software testing methodologies, test design techniques, risk-based testing, and quality best practices.
  • Ability to perform both automated and manual testing depending on product risk, feature maturity, and release needs.
  • Familiarity with API testing tools such as Postman is an asset.
  • Familiarity with SQL and basic database validation is an asset.
  • Familiarity with Windows command-line tools, scripting, installers, logs, and troubleshooting techniques is an asset.
  • Strong analytical, debugging, and root-cause investigation skills.
  • Good communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with developers, QA engineers, product owners, and other stakeholders.
  • Interest in learning audit, accounting, data analysis, and customer workflows.
  • Experience with audit, accounting, fintech, or data analysis products is a plus.

Requirements

  • Design, develop, maintain, and improve automated tests for the Caseware IDEA Windows desktop application.
  • Work with the existing Ranorex-based automation framework and identify opportunities to improve reliability, maintainability, coverage, and execution efficiency.
  • Evaluate alternative desktop automation tools or frameworks where they may better support product quality and delivery goals.
  • Propose, prototype, and help implement practical automation solutions that fit the product, team, and release process.
  • Integrate automated tests into existing development, GitHub, CI/CD, and release validation workflows.
  • Use AI-assisted engineering tools effectively to accelerate test authoring, debugging, analysis, and day-to-day delivery work.
  • Collaborate with developers and QA engineers to improve testability, observability, and automation coverage for new and existing features.
  • Perform manual testing, exploratory testing, regression testing, and release validation when automation is not sufficient or appropriate.
  • Participate in feature design, refinement, and technical discussions to identify quality risks early.
  • Translate product requirements, audit workflows, and customer scenarios into effective test strategies, test cases, and automation coverage.
  • Investigate test failures, analyze root causes, and work with the team to improve both product quality and automation reliability.
  • Support QA activities before software releases, including validation of critical workflows and release candidates.
  • Help define automation standards, coding practices, review expectations, and maintainable test design patterns.
  • Mentor and support QA team members in automation practices, tooling, troubleshooting, and technical test design.
  • Build product and domain knowledge over time, including IDEA workflows, audit concepts, and customer use cases.

  • We are committed to a collaborative culture, where your ideas are valued, and knowledge sharing is encouraged.
