Role Description

The Project Engineer - Infrastructure Development is responsible for overseeing the end-to-end planning and execution of multiple capital projects for internal and external clients. This role reports to the General Manager of Infrastructure Development and involves all or parts of managing:

  • Safety
  • Budgets
  • Schedules
  • Design
  • Permitting
  • Procurement
  • Construction
  • Commissioning
  • Progress reporting for railway infrastructure projects in North America

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Manage/contribute to infrastructure development projects through all phases, including preparation of conceptual studies, site reconnaissance, cost estimation, responding to third-party RFPs, scheduling, engineering design, and technical documentation.
  • Monitor and evaluate consultant and contractor performance, identifying and resolving potential issues to prevent project delays or budget overruns.
  • Coordinate and manage projects from initial design through construction, ensuring adherence to standards, best practices, budgets, and timelines.
  • Lead planning and coordination meetings.
  • Provide on-site supervision as necessary.
  • Oversee competitive sourcing, tendering, evaluation, and award processes for materials, equipment, and services specific to rail and/or infrastructure projects.
  • Maintain excellent working relationships with internal stakeholders, external clients, engineers, consultants, contractors, and third-party entities.

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

  • Lead engineering and design of civil, mechanical, electrical & instrumentation systems for railway operations.
  • Review and revise process deliverables such as process flow diagrams, mass, energy & water balance, single line diagrams, piping & instrumentation diagrams.
  • Review and apply relevant standards, such as municipal/state/federal regulations, building codes, and environmental guidelines.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Works well under pressure while being flexible, proactive, resourceful, and efficient.
  • A strategic mindset with the ability to balance long-term vision with short-term goals in project execution.
  • Proactive in identifying project risks, opportunities for design improvements, and cost savings.
  • Proficiency in Windows, Microsoft Project, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, AutoCAD (Civil 3D), and Bluebeam.

Physical/Travel Requirements

  • This is a fully remote position. Candidates must reside in and be authorized to work from a location within the contiguous United States.
  • Travel is anticipated to average between 15-30% but can be over 40% at times depending upon team needs.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to work in safety critical environments throughout North America.
  • Frequent site visits to railway and industrial facilities, which require walking on uneven ground, climbing stairs/ladders, and other similar activities.

Education & Experience

  • A Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or higher with a certification as a Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
  • Minimum 7 years of professional experience in the railway, oil & gas, or transload industries.
  • Proven track record working on project teams and leading teams to deliver projects in a respectful and collaborative work environment.
