Role Description

The Manager, Global Localization role offers a unique opportunity to lead the global documentation localization program, ensuring critical medical device documentation is accurately translated and delivered to customers and regulatory agencies around the world. As the leader of a specialized localization team, you will drive complex, cross-functional projects, manage strategic vendor partnerships, mentor project managers, and influence localization strategy across multiple product lines and business areas. Ideal candidates will bring localization and project management experience within a regulated environment, strong leadership skills, and a passion for collaborating with global stakeholders to improve processes, quality, and customer impact.

Essential Duties

  • Acts as a mentor to Localization Project Managers by providing guidance in localization best practices, project management methodology, and the company culture.
  • Creates and executes concurrent, multiple, complex localization project plans as appropriate for product line, business area, or corporate initiatives.
  • Acquires and maintains knowledge of medical device products and localization industries, regulatory standards, linguistic and documentation standards, using this information to revise and maintain documentation localization process documents, and applies this knowledge to the completion of all projects.
  • Creates and maintains departmental policies and procedures, evolving best practices, as needed for the business.
  • Works with internal partners to identify a list of projects requiring localization, to develop an annual budget, and to establish project priority within areas of responsibility.
  • Effectively manages communications, expectations, and interactions with all departments and strategic partners, representing the department on cross-functional teams as appropriate for product lines, business areas, or corporate initiatives.
  • Supports project managers in facilitating definition of quality and risk, resolving and/or escalating project-related issues in a timely fashion.
  • Takes lead role in language service provider relationship management, including conducting quarterly business reviews with vendors, as appropriate, based on project spend.
  • Manages linguist and reviewer resources, including the recruitment, retention, and dismissal of linguists and reviewers.
  • Conducts post-project debriefs on significant projects, keeps track of lessons learned, shares lessons with team members, and works toward improvements based on lessons learned.
  • Provides consultancy to internal customers and strategic partners regarding localization and internationalization best practices.
  • Administers content within a content management system, understands XML/DITA, creates output mechanisms, analyzes system workflows, and provides suggestions for improvements, when required.
  • Manages translation memories as appropriate for product lines, defines and maintains best practices for translation memory management for documentation localization.
  • Serves as a localization advocate within the organization, ensuring that localization is brought in early for project planning discussions and reasonable timelines are safeguarded, making stakeholders aware of localization dependencies, for example, approval of English source content.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Minimum 4 years of project and people management experience, including a minimum of 3 years of experience in localization in a regulated environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience with project management disciplines, methodologies, and localization tools.
  • Successful completion of global localization projects involving stakeholders from multiple regions (North America, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Europe, Middle East, and Africa).
  • Experience working with people of varying linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience with several different localization vendors.

Requirements

  • Proficient knowledge of project management disciplines, methodologies, and tools.
  • Familiarity working in a content management system.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently lead and manage multiple large projects and project teams.
  • Proficiency with computer-aided translation tools and other localization industry software and technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain frequent communications and interactions with language service providers including selection, specification of projects, negotiation, and quality checks.
  • Organizational, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Ability to integrate subject matter expertise to develop project plans.
  • Proficient ability to quickly identify and resolve conflict.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge and use of relevant software applications and skills to use them effectively, including project management software such as Microsoft Project.
