Role Description

The Supervisory Medical Records Technician (Coder) position will work in the Health Information Management (HIM) section at the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System. Medical Records Technicians (Coder) are skilled in classifying medical data from patient health records in the hospital setting, and/or physician-based settings, such as physician offices, group practices, multi-specialty clinics, and specialty centers.

  • Apply comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, disease processes, treatment modalities, diagnostic tests, medications, procedures, and health services principles to ensure proper code selection.
  • Select and assign codes from the current version of several coding systems including ICD, CPT, and/or HCPCS.
  • Monitor regulatory and policy requirements affecting coded information for the full spectrum of services provided by the VAMC.
  • Perform a comprehensive review of the patient health record to abstract medical, surgical, ancillary, demographic, social, and administrative data.
  • Assist facility staff with documentation requirements to accurately reflect patient care provided.
  • Consult with professional staff for clarification of conflicting or ambiguous clinical data.
  • Report incorrect documentation or code in the electronic patient health record.
  • Use a variety of computer applications in day-to-day activities, such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and Access.
  • Develop performance standards and conduct performance evaluations for subordinate staff.
  • Implement provisions of EEO programs to ensure fair and equal treatment for all employees.
  • Schedule the sequence of work and operations on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis.
  • Prepare workload and production reports; report on operations and problems encountered.

Qualifications

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • English Language Proficiency: Proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Certification: Mastery Level Certification through AHIMA or AAPC.
  • One year of creditable experience indicating knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and health records structure.
  • Education: Associate's degree in health information technology/management or related field with relevant coursework.
  • Completion of an AHIMA approved coding program or equivalent intense coding training program.
  • Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combinations of creditable experience and education are qualifying.
  • Successful completion of a course for medical technicians or similar training may substitute for experience.

Requirements

  • To qualify for the GS-10 level, one year of creditable experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level of a MRT (Coder) is required.
  • Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties.
  • Advanced knowledge of current coding classification systems such as ICD, CPT, and HCPCS.
  • Ability to provide or coordinate staff development and training.
  • Leadership and managerial skills, including interpersonal relations and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data, identify trends, and present results.
