Role Description

The Outpatient Coder exhibits professional and proficient communication with patients, co-workers, medical staff, and administrative staff. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Audit charge tickets for accurate and required CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes, according to third party requirements.
• Communicate with medical staff to acquire necessary information for accurate coding.
• Interpret medical record documentation to obtain necessary information for accurate coding.
• Maintain knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes, computer system, procedure changes and updates, and other educational material pertinent to this position.
• Perform miscellaneous office duties as time permits and/or other duties as assigned by the supervisor and/or director.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Knowledge of outpatient coding, CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS.
• Proficient and professional communication, both verbal and written.
• Basic math and accounting skills.
• One or more years of related experience in medical coding required.
• Associates, Vocational Degree, or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management preferred.
• RHIA, RHIT, CPC, CCS-P and/or certification or other related coding certificate through AHIMA/AAPC preferred.
• Proficient computer/keyboarding skills required.
• Successful completion of the pre-employment health screening process required.
• Must be able to attend the work site per schedule.
