Role Description

The Washington State Cancer Registry (WSCR), within the Community Based Prevention Section of the Office of Healthy Communities, provides critical cancer data used to understand health outcomes and inform public health policy and prevention efforts across Washington State. WSCR gathers, analyzes, interprets, and reports cancer and related health data while supporting efforts to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of public health programs.

The Quality Assurance, Education and Training Coordinator plays a key role in maintaining the accuracy, completeness, and quality of cancer registry data. Reporting to the Registry Manager, this position coordinates quality assurance, education, and training activities for WSCR and serves as a subject matter expert on oncology data requirements and changes to cancer data collection standards. The position applies critical thinking and detailed data analysis to identify trends and deficiencies, support corrective action, and ensure registry practices align with national standards and expectations.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Quality Assurance & Data Accuracy:
    • Coordinate quality assurance activities, including case consolidation, quality checks, and edit error processing, to ensure WSCR data is accurate and complete.
    • Analyze data to identify trends and deficiencies and support compliance with national cancer registry standards and requirements.
  • Oncology Data & Registry Expertise:
    • Serve as a subject matter expert on oncology data requirements and cancer registry practices.
    • Monitor changes to registry standards and data requirements and apply expertise to resolve complex data quality issues and communicate updates to the team.
  • Education & Training:
    • Identify training needs and develop and provide education, training, and mentoring based on quality assurance findings and changes in registry requirements.
    • Develop resources that promote consistent data collection practices and understanding of registry standards.
  • Registry Operations & Team Support:
    • Perform cancer case abstraction and provide technical assistance and guidance on registry data quality and requirements.
    • Collaborate with the Registry Manager and WSCR team to address quality concerns, implement improvements, and support other registry activities as needed.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience performing cancer case abstracting, coding, and consolidation in a hospital or central cancer registry setting.
  • Oncology Data Specialist Certification and at least 3 years of experience performing cancer case abstracting, coding, and consolidation in a hospital or central cancer registry setting.

Requirements

  • Experience utilizing the STORE manual, Solid Tumor Rules, ICD-O-3, Hematopoietic Database & Manual, SEER Summary Stage, EOD coding instructions, AJCC Staging Manual, and NCCN Guidelines, evidenced by direct application in prior abstracting/QA work.
  • Demonstrated experience applying cancer coding schemas/formats issued by a national standard setter (NAACCR, NPCR, AJCC, COC, or SEER).
  • Demonstrated experience conducting quality reviews of cancer case abstracts and providing corrective feedback to abstracting staff.
  • Demonstrated experience developing or delivering technical training/education programs in a cancer registry or comparable clinical data setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing and/or presenting educational and training materials on cancer registry topics.
  • Two years of professional experience coordinating activities in a health services program.
  • Knowledge and experience with electronic reporting methods and systems.
