Role Description

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides virtual clinical consultation and support across the Mental Health and Addictions portfolio at North Bay Regional Health Centre, functioning within the Standards of Practice for Extended Class as set out by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), including the CNO Practice Guideline on Telepractice (41041). The NP delivers remote clinical assessment, consultation, and care planning support to individuals accessing mental health and addictions services, working collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams at both the College Drive and King Street Campuses.

Qualifications

• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class {RN (EC)}, with a specialty certificate in either Adult or Primary Health Care required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCP) certificate (within the last 12 months) required.
• Recent clinical experience (within last 2 years) in a mental health and/or addictions setting preferred.
• Competencies related to safe, effective and ethical prescribing.
• Successful completion of controlled substance education and ability to prescribe controlled substances.
• Current Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing certification is an asset.
• Familiarity with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) Practice Guideline on Telepractice (41041).
• Understanding of telepractice as a model of care delivered to known patients within an established therapeutic relationship.
• Experience or training in virtual/telehealth care delivery an asset.
• Ability to develop and implement basic and advanced educational programs.
• Experience with substance use interventions (i.e. Motivational Interviewing (MI), Stages of Change).

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with all members of an interdisciplinary health care team, including clients, families and community partners, in a virtual capacity.
• Commitment to ongoing education and quality improvement to facilitate, integrate and spread best practice principles in mental health and addictions.
• Ability to exercise professional judgement and critical thinking in a remote/virtual care context.
• Ability to apply ethical frameworks and choose the optimal assessment and treatment intervention.
• Strong therapeutic communication skills, with the ability to communicate both verbally and in writing in a clear, concise manner, considering the intended audience.
• Ability to establish and maintain a home workspace that meets NBRHC's Teleworking policy requirements, including a private/segregated work area, reliable internet service, and a dedicated phone line accessible in case of emergency.
• Ability to complete and maintain required teleworking documentation (Privacy & Security Agreement, Home Office Health Form, Working From Home Agreement).
• Ability to maintain telepractice documentation standards, including verbal consent noting limitations of the care delivery method.
• Communication with patients through approved platforms only (e.g. OTN or NBRHC-approved virtual care technology).
• Proficiency with virtual care platforms and technology, and ability to maintain privacy and security standards (PHIPA) in a remote care setting.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload, rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
• Commitment to ensure personal safety, safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers, and visitors.
• Ability to support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events required.
• Demonstrated good attendance and work record.
• Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required. All unilingual candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered if the identified French requirement has been met or there are no successful bilingual candidates. A formal French test will be conducted to evaluate the proficiency level.
• Pay rate, benefits and other terms and conditions are as per the ONA Local 020 Collective Agreement.
