Role Description

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) / Associate Director, MSL is a field-based scientific expert on a nationally focused Eye Health team within Emerging Areas Clinical Development and Medical Affairs. The role reports to the MSL Team Lead and is responsible for high-quality, peer-to-peer scientific exchange with prioritized Scientific Experts (SCEs) and other appropriate healthcare stakeholders. The MSL will build trusted scientific relationships, gather actionable insights, and support Eye Health Scientific Objectives and strategic decision-making across Medicine and Research.

The role requires strong knowledge of retinal diseases and the evolving ophthalmology ecosystem, including patient journeys, diagnostic and imaging practices, treatment paradigms, evidence gaps, and clinical-development priorities. The MSL will serve as a scientific resource regarding disease states and Boehringer Ingelheim's investigational Eye Health portfolio, consistent with approved materials, applicable policies, and Medical independence.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Customer Interactions and Scientific Exchange
    • Conduct balanced, evidence-based scientific exchange with prioritized SCEs and other appropriate HCPs across retinal diseases.
    • Establish and maintain peer-to-peer scientific relationships with relevant stakeholders.
    • Develop a strong understanding of territory-specific referral networks and patient journeys.
    • Respond to unsolicited scientific questions regarding Eye Health disease states and Boehringer Ingelheim compounds.
    • Provide disease-state education aligned with approved Scientific Objectives.
    • Participate in scientific congresses and medical meetings as assigned.
  • Eye Health Scientific Expertise
    • Maintain current expertise in retinal anatomy and physiology, disease pathophysiology, and standards of care.
    • Interpret and discuss ophthalmic imaging and endpoint concepts relevant to retinal development programs.
    • Monitor emerging agents, mechanisms, clinical trials, publications, guidelines, and scientific trends.
    • Translate complex scientific and clinical information into clear discussions tailored to specialist audiences.
  • Territory Planning and Stakeholder Strategy
    • Develop and execute a territory-specific medical engagement plan.
    • Map and prioritize relevant SCEs and stakeholder networks.
    • Continuously evaluate the engagement plan based on evolving evidence and stakeholder needs.
    • Identify gaps between external stakeholder needs and current scientific resources.
    • Collaborate with various internal partners while maintaining clear role boundaries and Medical independence.

Qualifications

  • BSc. required plus one of the following:
    • Advanced science/clinical degree with 1+ years’ relevant experience (preferred).
    • Masters in health sciences with 3+ years’ experience.
    • BSc. with MBA or BSN with MBA, and 5+ years’ experience.
    • PA with 3+ years’ experience.
    • Other medical licensure with 7+ years of experience.
    • 2+ years’ MSL experience in relevant therapeutic area – preferred.
  • Skills: Strong communication, ability to interpret scientific data, knowledge of regional healthcare systems, field-based job with 50% travel, use of electronic communication tools.

Requirements

  • BSc. required plus one of the following:
    • Advanced science/clinical degree with 3+ years’ relevant experience (preferred).
    • Masters in health sciences with 5+ years’ experience.
    • BSc. with MBA or BSN with MBA, and 7+ years’ experience.
    • PA with 5+ years’ experience.
    • Other medical licensure with 9+ years of experience.
    • 2+ years’ MSL experience in relevant therapeutic area – required, 4+ years preferred.
  • Skills: Strong communication, ability to interpret scientific data, knowledge of regional healthcare systems, field-based job with 50% travel, use of electronic communication tools.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities

  • Clinical Development and Evidence Support
    • Partner with Clinical Development and Clinical Operations to support scientific engagement.
    • Gather and communicate field insights relevant to trial feasibility and patient identification.
    • Support identification of evidence gaps and research questions.
  • Insight Generation and Communication
    • Identify and document high-quality scientific insights in approved systems.
    • Synthesize themes across engagements and communicate implications to internal stakeholders.
    • Monitor changes in retinal care delivery and stakeholder networks.

Compensation

The base salary range for the MSL position is $147,200 to $220,800 and for the AD, MSL position the base salary range is $190,500 to $285,700. The position may be eligible for a role specific discretionary bonus, relocation, and/or other compensation elements. We continuously review market data and may adjust salary ranges as needed in the future. Actual compensation will be based on job-related factors such as skills, experience, and qualifications, and other factors permitted by law.
