[Hiring] Maternal Mortality Review Panel Medical Case Abstractor @State of Washington

Role Description

This home-based (remote) position is a permanent, part-time (.60) position with a work schedule of 24 hours per week.

The Nursing Consultant, Public Health position provides public health nursing leadership and consultation for the Maternal Mortality Review by creating detailed narratives based off clinical record abstraction and for key quality improvement initiatives aimed at the reduction of maternal mortality. Serving as a cross-office and statewide resource to public and private entities including local public agencies, clinicians, and the general public.

Key Responsibilities Include:

• Clinical Review & Abstraction
  • Oversee and assist in the clinical abstraction process.
  • Conduct in-depth clinical reviews, organize sourced medical records, and use compiled materials to build comprehensive case narratives.
  • Determine if deaths are potentially pregnancy-related and categorize them accurately.
  • Stay up-to-date on key causes of maternal mortality and best practice standards of care.
• Panel Presentations & Collaboration
  • Consult with the Maternal Mortality Review Panel (MMRP) using the Core Summary Report and clinical expertise.
  • Support the state’s MMRP and the Washington State Perinatal Collaborative (WSPC) to identify and implement targeted clinical improvements.
  • Assist in disseminating findings regarding the MMRP’s recommendations.
• Family & Community Engagement
  • Support the execution of informant interviews as part of the abstraction process.
  • Provide grief and trauma-related support to families and communities.
  • Assess if specific accommodations are needed to foster clear communication with informants.
  • Strictly maintain full confidentiality of case information.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or related degree.
• Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the State of Washington.
• Two years’ experience in public health nursing in an administrative, consultative, or teaching role.
• Two years’ experience within medical records abstraction, maternal health mortality and morbidity efforts, or substance use disorder programs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in nursing or public health.
• License or certification in substance use disorder, medical coding.
• Four years’ experience in public health nursing in an administrative, consultative, or teaching role.

Working Conditions

• Home-based position with occasional in-person attendance required.
• Work schedule of 24 hours per week, typically Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
• Infrequent travel may be required to meet with community members and present findings.
• Daily contact with office-level managers and staff, frequent contact with other state agencies.
