Role Description

This position is located in the Health Information Management section at the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. The Lead Medical Records Technician Coder works within a team environment, supporting peers in meeting goals and deadlines while handling multiple tasks with frequently changing projects.

• Assigns codes to documented patient care encounters (Inpatient and/or outpatient).
• Applies advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, treatment modalities, diagnostic tests, medications, and procedures.
• Selects and assigns codes from several coding systems.
• Monitors ever-changing regulatory requirements affecting coding information.
• Performs comprehensive review of patient health records to abstract medical, surgical, ancillary, demographic, social, and administrative data.
• Monitors the status and progress of work and makes day-to-day adjustments.
• Instructs employees in specific tasks and job techniques.
• Provides job training to new coders.
• Reviews and makes improvements in documentation systems used to provide patient care.

Qualifications

• Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.
• English/Language Proficiency: MRTs (Coder) must be proficient in spoken and written English.
• Certification: Must have one of the following:
  • Mastery Level Certification through AHIMA or AAPC.
• Experience and Education:
  • One year of creditable experience indicating knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and health records.
  • An associate's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in health information technology/management, or related degree with a minimum of 12 semester hours in health information technology/management.
  • Equivalent combinations of creditable experience and education are qualifying.
• Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to work with a team to provide technical guidance and coordinate activities.
  • Advanced knowledge of current coding classification systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of training methods and ability to provide training to new coding staff.
  • Ability to collect and analyze data and present results.
  • Leadership skills, including interpersonal relations and conflict resolution.

Requirements

• Must live within 50 miles of a VA Medical Center.
• This position is designated as remote, with the option for remote work assessed continuously.
• Selected candidates may need to return to a VA office if required.

Physical Requirements

The work is sedentary and is usually accomplished while the incumbent is comfortably seated. Some walking and standing may occur during meetings or while researching assignments. Items carried typically are light objects such as briefcases and notebooks.
