Role Description

The Corporate Director of Ancillary Services provides system-level leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for ancillary clinical services across the organization, with primary responsibility for Laboratory, Radiology/Imaging, and Respiratory Therapy. The scope of responsibility may expand to include additional ancillary services based on organizational needs.

The Director partners with hospital and corporate leaders to:

  • Establish consistent standards
  • Improve quality and patient safety
  • Strengthen regulatory compliance
  • Optimize productivity and expense management
  • Advance service-line performance
  • Support appropriate use of technology, equipment, and contracted services

This position requires regular travel across assigned facilities to assess operations, support local leaders, standardize best practices, and drive system-wide performance improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide corporate leadership and strategic oversight across all affiliated hospitals.
  • Establish system-wide operational standards, performance expectations, policies, and best practices while recognizing facility-specific regulatory and service requirements.
  • Partner with hospital executives and department leaders to improve quality, safety, service, productivity, turnaround times, staffing efficiency, and financial performance.
  • Develop and monitor key performance indicators across ancillary services, including quality, utilization, turnaround time, productivity, patient experience, critical-result communication, therapy outcomes, service access, and other department-specific measures.
  • Support regulatory readiness and ongoing compliance with applicable federal, state, accreditation, and specialty requirements.
  • Collaborate with local service line leaders and qualified specialty professionals to ensure clinical and technical decisions remain within appropriate scope, licensure, certification, and medical staff oversight.
  • Identify variation across facilities and lead standardization initiatives that improve reliability, efficiency, quality, and cost effectiveness.
  • Evaluate staffing models, skill mix, productivity standards, on-call coverage, recruitment challenges, and workforce development needs across ancillary departments.
  • Partner with Supply Chain, Finance, IT, Clinical Engineering, Operations and hospital leadership on capital planning, equipment replacement, service contracts, vendor performance, and technology optimization.
  • Support evaluation and implementation of information systems, interfaces, workflow technology, and other digital solutions affecting ancillary services.
  • Review vendors, equipment maintenance, and other outsourced or contracted services for quality, service, utilization, and value.
  • Lead or support performance improvement initiatives and outcomes, patient throughput, result availability, and communication of critical findings.
  • Facilitate collaboration among ancillary services, nursing, medical staff, emergency services, surgery, and other clinical departments to improve patient flow and care coordination.
  • Provide leadership coaching and operational support to facility ancillary leaders; assist with leader onboarding, succession planning, and development of high-performing teams.
  • Support integration, due diligence, operational assessment, and standardization activities for newly acquired or transitioning facilities, as applicable.
  • Travel to affiliated hospitals and facilities to assess operations, support leaders, validate improvement plans, and evaluate performance.

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration, business, clinical laboratory science, radiologic sciences, nursing, or a related healthcare field.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in healthcare administration, business administration, nursing, or a related field.
  • Professional certification or licensure in a healthcare, laboratory, imaging, quality, or healthcare management specialty is preferred but not required.
  • 7+ years of progressive healthcare experience, including at least 5 years of leadership responsibility in hospital operations, ancillary services, diagnostic services, or a related multi-department clinical environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead across multiple clinical, technical, diagnostic, or therapeutic disciplines.
  • Direct leadership experience in one or more ancillary service areas is strongly preferred.
  • Experience overseeing multiple facilities, departments, or service lines in a health system, corporate, regional, or multi-site environment is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated success improving operational performance, quality, regulatory readiness, staffing/productivity, financial performance, and standardization across complex healthcare services.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements affecting hospital ancillary services.

Licenses/Certificates

  • No single clinical license is required if the candidate otherwise meets the education and leadership experience requirements.
  • Relevant professional licensure or certification (e.g., laboratory, radiology/imaging, respiratory therapy, rehabilitation, nursing, healthcare quality, or healthcare management) is preferred.
  • Specialty certification across all areas of responsibility is not required.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to travel extensively (up to 50%) across hospital and corporate sites.
  • Strong leadership, communication, analytical, financial, and change-management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and lead through collaboration in a matrixed, multi-facility organization.
  • Ability to interpret operational and quality data, identify variation, establish priorities, and drive measurable improvement.
  • Ability to effectively lead highly specialized departments by partnering with appropriately credentialed technical and clinical subject-matter experts.
