Role Description

The Associate Medical Director provides physician leadership, clinical oversight and medical governance across WorkCare’s occupational health services. This role partners with operational, clinical, and business leaders to ensure high-quality, evidence-based, and compliant delivery of services while supporting positive client and employee outcomes.

The Associate Medical Director serves as a subject matter expert in occupational health and preventive health, providing medical consultation, protocol oversight, quality assurance, case review, and clinical guidance across multiple service lines. The role supports clinical staff, contributes to program innovation and growth, and helps ensure alignment with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and WorkCare policies. The position may include direct patient care, client-facing responsibilities, physician consultation, and oversight of clinical programs based on organizational needs and physician qualifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide physician leadership, medical consultation, clinical oversight, and subject matter expertise across WorkCare services involving physician participation or oversight.
  • Perform, support, or oversee clinical evaluations, medical reviews, consultations, and other physician services through virtual, telephonic, onsite, or other approved delivery models.
  • Serve as a medical escalation resource for complex, unusual, urgent, or high-risk clinical matters.
  • Provide medically appropriate determinations, recommendations, and guidance consistent with the available information, assigned authority, applicable requirements, and scope of practice.
  • Develop, review, approve, interpret, and support clinical protocols, policies, standing orders, workflows, documentation standards, and escalation pathways.
  • Participate in quality assurance, peer review, case review, audits, incident review, corrective action, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Support compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, professional standards, client requirements, and WorkCare policies and procedures.
  • Promote appropriate clinical documentation, confidentiality, privacy, ethical practice, and risk management across assigned services.
  • Collaborate with WorkCare clinical, operational, business, and medical leadership teams, as well as authorized client and external stakeholders, to support effective service delivery.
  • Provide medical input for program design, implementation, evaluation, enhancement, and resolution of clinical or operational concerns.
  • Coordinate or consult with treating providers, specialists, healthcare organizations, and other authorized parties when clinically appropriate and permitted.
  • Support client education, staff development, clinical training, proposals, presentations, and strategic initiatives requiring physician expertise.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and timely documentation, reports, communications, and records in accordance with applicable requirements.
  • Maintain required licenses, certifications, credentials, continuing education, and professional competency for assigned responsibilities.
  • Help ensure appropriate physician coverage, continuity, and handoff of assigned responsibilities.
  • Perform other physician, leadership, administrative, or program responsibilities within qualifications and scope of practice, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) from a U.S. accredited institution.
  • Valid Medical license(s) per state.
  • DEA registration.
  • State-controlled substance certification if indicated.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of occupational medicine experience.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Medical malpractice insurability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board Certification in Occupational and Environmental Medicine (American Board of Preventive Medicine).
  • Prior medical leadership, medical director, or associate medical director experience.
  • Current MRO certification.
  • Active membership in ACOEM.
  • Experience collaborating with EHS, industrial hygiene, and corporate leadership teams.

Computer Skills

  • Must be competent in the Windows operating system environment, Adobe Professional, Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and learn other software as needed.

Physical Demands

  • Requires sitting for long periods of time, working at a desk.
  • Some bending and stretching could be required.
  • Working under stress and use of computer/phone required.
  • Manual dexterity required for use of computer keyboard.
  • Occasionally may be required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and/or crouch.
  • May occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.

Work Environment

  • Mainly indoor, office environment conditions.
  • The noise level is usually moderate.
  • Air quality is good and temperature is controlled.
  • Work Environment must be free from background noise and distraction; noise level is acceptable, temperature is controlled. At-home setup must meet all Company IT, privacy, and safety requirements.
