Role Description
Carbon Mapper is seeking a senior Director of Communications and Marketing to help connect the organization's data and insights to the stakeholders capable of driving climate action. As the senior Director of Communications and Marketing, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing our communication strategy, growing brand awareness, and ensuring our mission, impact, and value are effectively communicated to various stakeholders. This role requires exceptional writing abilities, a deep understanding of public and media relations, experience collaborating with diverse stakeholders, and a passion for leveraging digital content to drive engagement and impact.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Design and Implement Communications Strategy

Design and implement a comprehensive global communication and marketing strategy for Carbon Mapper, including for high impact data-to-action initiatives in sectors such as oil and gas and waste as well as increasing awareness of our open data platform.

Demonstrate ability to craft comprehensive and effective strategies while navigating ecosystem, sector-specific, and partner dynamics to ensure alignment and manage sensitivities.

Own Brand Positioning, Audience Strategy, and Product Marketing

Define and evolve Carbon Mapper’s brand positioning and value proposition, ensuring our story is distinct, credible, and resonant across policymakers, industry, funders, media, and the public.

Develop and lead audience and stakeholder messaging strategy – segmenting key audiences, understanding their needs and motivations, and tailoring messaging, channels, and content to reach and engage each effectively.

Drive measurable growth in engagement and adoption of Carbon Mapper data, from first discovery through active, repeat use of the data portal, APIs, and reports, and define the metrics to track that growth.

Lead storytelling and product marketing for Carbon Mapper’s data and technology, working across Impact, Product, Science, and other teams to translate our work into compelling, audience-specific narratives and value propositions.

Drive Narrative and Thought Leadership

Proactively insert Carbon Mapper into timely and relevant conversations requiring active understanding and tracking of climate policy, science, politics, and industry trends.

Establish metrics to rigorously evaluate campaign effectiveness and continuously optimize strategy.

Lead the development of content strategies across various platforms, driving engagement, amplifying our message, and increasing visibility.

Lead on the development, promotion, and protection of Carbon Mapper’s brand, including brand guidelines and branded templates for internal and external use.

Ensure consistent messaging and alignment across internal and external communications efforts and in alignment with Carbon Mapper leadership.

Coordinate with External Partners

Coordinate strategy and messaging with key partners, philanthropic donors, and Carbon Mapper teams.

Support Carbon Mapper spokespersons to maximize media opportunities at major forums such as COP, AGU, and regional climate weeks.

Campaign Design and Execution

Lead on global media relations, including maintaining and building a portfolio of press and media contacts for Carbon Mapper.

Lead on high-impact campaign development for global audiences.

Collaborate closely with cross-functional internal teams to identify messaging strategies and produce accessible and engaging content.

Provide communications and logistics support for Carbon Mapper events, virtual and in person, as necessary.

Team Management, Budget, and Success Measurement

Lead, coach and grow a small team of communication professionals, setting priorities, providing feedback, and developing team members’ skills.

Assess and grow Carbon Mapper’s use of consultants and agency partners to support a growing global Communications strategy.

Develop and manage the Communications Department budget – including coordinating across departments.

Rigorously assess quality, strategic fit, and cost-effectiveness of content and strategies.

Monitor and analyze communication efforts, leveraging metrics and insights to refine strategies, optimize performance, and drive continuous improvement.
Qualifications
-
15 years of experience in a communications and marketing role preferably at an environmental, climate or earth science/research nonprofit or another mission-based research organization or institution.

5+ years in leadership roles managing a team.

Demonstrated experience leading Communications and Marketing functions including proven success in developing and executing strategic communications campaigns for national and global audiences.

Exceptional writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to shift between technical and lay audiences.

Strong understanding of a variety of issues including climate change, greenhouse gas mitigation and methane emissions.

Ability to juggle multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Strong understanding of media relations, with a track record of successfully pitching stories and managing media relationships.

Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams and external partners.

Demonstrated expertise in developing and implementing digital content strategies.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Proven leadership in fast-growing environments.
Location
Carbon Mapper is headquartered in Pasadena, California, but we embrace the virtual office and are continuing to grow our team across the United States.
Compensation
The total compensation for this opportunity includes a base salary range of $200,000 – $230,000. This is our target compensation range and is subject to multiple factors including level, experience, and location.
