Role Description
We are seeking an experienced Underwriting Director to play a pivotal role in advancing our Canadian Life & Health reinsurance business. Reporting to the Chief Underwriting Officer, you will be entrusted with evaluating complex facultative risks—particularly large and high-net-worth cases—while delivering exceptional service to our clients. This is more than a technical underwriting role. It is an opportunity to shape market presence, build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders, and grow into broader strategic leadership responsibilities over time.

Underwriting Excellence

Evaluate facultative cases—with a focus on large and complex risks—applying sound medical, financial, and non-medical underwriting judgment.

Ensure timely turnaround aligned with client service commitments.

Client Partnership and Market Impact

Serve as a trusted advisor to clients by providing technical expertise, thoughtful insights, and responsive support.

Build and sustain strong relationships through regular communication and in-person visits.

Represent Gen Re at industry conferences, client meetings, and underwriting forums.

Strategic Contribution

Contribute to initiatives that enhance underwriting practices, operational efficiency, and enterprise risk management.

Track emerging industry trends and share insights with senior leadership to inform strategy.

Play an active role in strengthening Gen Re’s profile and value proposition in the Canadian marketplace.

Collaboration and Leadership

Partner cross-functionally with Actuarial, Marketing, and Operations teams on projects and client initiatives.

Support contestable claims review when required.

Share insights from client interactions and contribute to internal knowledge development.
Qualifications

10+ years of life underwriting experience, including large case underwriting.

Strong expertise in medical, financial, and non-medical risk assessment.

Approval authority of $10 million.

Experience with critical illness and disability underwriting is highly valued.

University degree (business, finance, economics, or related discipline preferred).

FLMI, AALU, or FALU designation (completed or in progress), or a commitment to professional development.

Exceptional judgment and a track record of delivering high-quality underwriting decisions.

Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex concepts to diverse audiences.

Self-directed, resourceful, and highly organized with excellent prioritization skills.

Proven ability to build credibility and trust with clients and colleagues at all levels.
