At Nationwide®, “on your side” goes beyond just words. Our customers are at the center of everything we do and we’re looking for associates who are passionate about delivering extraordinary care.

Nationwide Financial is seeking a Senior Actuarial Consultant to join the Valuation team supporting our growing Group Benefits business. This role focuses primarily on Group Health and Employer Stop Loss valuation, with the opportunity to influence how actuarial insights support business strategy, financial reporting, and continued growth.

The position will analyze claims data, establish reserves, and communicate actuarial conclusions to business leaders and cross-functional partners. The portfolio includes traditional Stop Loss, level-funded Stop Loss, captive Stop Loss, and other Accident & Health and Life products.

What you’ll do

  • Perform monthly and quarterly claims analysis, loss valuation, and reserve calculations.
  • Construct, maintain, and enhance actuarial projection, valuation, and financial reporting models.
  • Support statutory valuation activities, as well as reinsurance analysis and pricing.
  • Analyze complex data sets and product calculations to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Develop clear recommendations and communicate technical concepts—including reserving actions—to business leaders and other stakeholders.
  • Lead or contribute to cross-functional peer reviews that strengthen quality, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Build relationships with Reserving, Finance, IT, Underwriting, Reinsurance, and business teams.
  • Support onboarding and training for new associates and help develop practical training materials.

Qualifications

  • Previous Employer Stop Loss or Group Health valuation experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Approximately five to seven years of actuarial experience.
  • An ASA or comparable Associate-level actuarial credential; candidates progressing toward FSA are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience in actuarial valuation and loss reserving, financial reporting, or related insurance analytics.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and comfort working with Excel-based actuarial models.
  • The ability to explain complex actuarial concepts clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • A collaborative, self-directed approach and the ability to make sound decisions in an evolving business environment.
  • Experience with Power BI or similar data visualization tools is a plus.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, or similar background requiring modeling, programming, or quantitative analysis.
  • Generally attained ASA and is actively enrolled in the Actuarial Development Program; working towards FSA or recently attained FSA.
  • Typically, four to seven years of actuarial experience.
  • Proven knowledge of actuarial business functions, statistical methods of analysis, actuarial models, actuarial software and databases.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products (including VBA within Access and Excel), analytical software (such as Tableau) and programming languages.
  • Basic competencies including command skills, strategic agility, delegation, motivating others, business perspective, and accounting.
  • Highly-developed competencies for business understanding, problem solving, customer focus, dealing with ambiguity, drive for results, and learning ability.

Benefits

  • Medical/dental/vision coverage.
  • Life insurance, short and long term disability coverage.
  • Paid time off with newly hired associates receiving a minimum of 18 days paid time off each full calendar year pro-rated quarterly based on hire date.
  • Nine paid holidays.
  • 8 hours of Lifetime paid time off.
  • 8 hours of Unity Day paid time off.
  • 401(k) with company match.
