Role Description

As an Intermediate Accountant, you'll prepare accounts and tax returns for a range of entity types — companies, trusts, superannuation funds, partnerships, and individuals — while ensuring everything is compliant, well-documented, and delivered within agreed timeframes. You'll work closely with senior staff and partners, contributing to a firm that's built its reputation on trusted, high-quality financial advice. Success in the first 6–12 months looks like managing your own portfolio of client files with minimal oversight, consistently meeting lodgement deadlines, and becoming a reliable point of technical support for junior team members.

What You'll Do

• Staff Assistance
  • Ensure the high-quality standards required by the organisation are maintained by obtaining and retaining technical competence and assisting other team members when required.
  • Maintain professional qualifications by attending and participating in training and development programs as determined by the appropriate Manager or delegated officer.
  • Mentoring and providing training and support to junior team members.
  • Other duties as directed.
• Client Management
  • Ensure client's needs are satisfied by completing all tasks required under the clients’ specific terms of engagement and Strategem’s professional service levels.
  • Ensure client work is completed in compliance with all appropriate regulatory regimes with any identified breaches reported immediately to the appropriate Manager or delegated officer.
  • Assist senior staff with meeting lodgement deadlines.
  • Assisting partners and other Accountants when required.
• Technical
  • Preparation of accounts and tax returns for a variety of entities including companies, trusts, superannuation funds, partnerships, and individuals.
  • Completion of tax return and preparation of associated reports within agreed time frames.
  • Maintenance of clients records on firm’s database.
  • Set up and retain individual and organisation’s tax records.
  • Maintain professional qualifications by attending and participating in training and development programs as determined by the appropriate Manager or delegated officer.
• Project
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement goals of the firm by making recommendations for improvements in work practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Business/Commerce with a major in accounting, plus 2–4 years of relevant experience
• Full CA or CPA qualification, or actively working towards completion
• Sound working knowledge and technical skills in tax and accounting
• Knowledge and experience with MYOB Accountants Enterprise and QuickBooks
• Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and web-based packages
• Well-developed verbal and written communication skills, with internal and external stakeholders
• Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
• A proactive, client-first approach with a strong understanding of compliance issues

Nice to Have

• Understanding of CPA/ICAA membership requirements
• Experience mentoring or supporting graduate accountants
