[Hiring] Finance Operator, Data @Mechanism Ventures

3wks ago - Mechanism Ventures is hiring a remote Finance Operator, Data. πŸ’Έ Salary: usd 150,000 - 170,000 per year πŸ“Location: USA

Role Description

The Finance Operator, Data builds the financial data infrastructure that all of our companies depend on. This is not a data engineering role, or a dashboard builder who hands outputs to other people. This is not a narrow technical role with a well-defined backlog.

  • You are a finance person first, someone who understands how businesses work, can read a P&L, and knows whether a number is right or wrong.
  • Your differentiator is that you are technically capable in ways most finance people are not, using SQL, data modelling, transformations, automation, and reporting infrastructure.
  • You build things that produce correct financial outputs reliably, at scale, and communicate what those outputs mean to the people who need to act on them.
  • In your first 6 months, you will be building more than just communicating, laying the foundation on which everything else runs.
  • This role requires generalist financial acumen, driver-based instincts, multi-company fluency, and the breadth to operate independently at the highest level of the finance function.

What You’ll Do

  • Build the data infrastructure all companies depend on.
  • Build dashboards, models, automated reports, and data checks that are replicated across every company we launch.
  • Combine your data expertise with your financial and accounting acumen to automate workflows like revenue recognition, cohort analysis, and reconciliations.
  • Build a cohort analysis from raw transactional data by structuring the data, building the model, and making it interpretable to an operator.
  • Create automated financial alerts that catch problems early and surface them automatically to minimize manual financial review.
  • Grow into communicating what you build, explaining what the data means to CEOs, practice area leads, boards, and cross-functional teams.
  • Handle the full financial surface area, navigating valuations, tax considerations, SPV distributions, inter-company billing, and funding proposals.
  • Be a finance person first, understanding unit economics and knowing when a number is wrong.
  • Operate in a multi-company environment, holding financial context across multiple businesses simultaneously.
  • No passengers: you get better fast, build systems rather than just doing the work, and leave functions better than when you found them.

What You’ll Bring

  • 3-6 years of FP&A, financial analysis, or a finance-adjacent analytical role.
  • Ability to read a P&L, understand unit economics, and explain what a number means in business terms.
  • Use SQL to answer financial questions, not just pull data.
  • Experience building something from messy, real-world financial data.
  • Understanding of revenue recognition across at least one business model well enough to defend it to an auditor.
  • Knowledge of the difference between a technically correct output and a financially correct one.
  • Experience building a cohort model from raw data.
  • Experience working in a multi-entity environment.
  • Familiarity with Aleph, Looker, Metabase, or a comparable FP&A or BI platform at the build level.
  • Experience automating a reporting process that used to require manual work.
  • Accounting literacy to spot a miscoded transaction and know the correct treatment.

This is not the right role if

  • You think of yourself as a data analyst who happens to work in finance.
  • You need a fully scoped backlog before you can prioritize your own work.
  • You are more comfortable producing outputs than understanding what they mean.
  • You reach for percentage-growth assumptions when you need a forecast.
  • You want to stay in the data layer permanently and have no interest in using it to provide insights.
  • You are looking for a mature, fully systematized finance function to step into.

Time Commitment

This role is full-time and will need to overlap with US ET for the majority of the workday. It is an exciting opportunity that demands a level of dedication beyond the standard 9 to 5.
