The Senior Accountant, Payroll will primarily manage the full cycle accounting for payroll, including payroll processing, reconciliation, and reporting, while ensuring compliance with company policy as well as federal, state, and local payroll and tax regulations. All responsibilities need to be performed in a timely and accurate manner, utilizing judgment, discretion, and critical thinking in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting with direct payroll experience and a strong understanding of payroll accounting principles.
Manage full-cycle semi-monthly payroll processing across multiple subsidiaries for employees working in nearly all 50 states. This includes incorporating payroll data from multiple internal departments and external benefit providers, while maintaining supporting documentation for all changes
Support month-end close process by ensuring accurate and timely recording of payroll transactions in the general ledger, preparing reports, and managing reconciliations
Process off-cycle payroll batches (terminations, equity ISO/NSO/ESPP/RSU releases, reimbursements, etc), as necessary
Review and process hours from a timekeeping system on a semi-monthly basis and import to the payroll module; independently identify and investigate payroll discrepancies and facilitate resolution
Create reconciliation reports at month-end and year-end for 401k, benefits, and equity team needs. Ensure payroll compliance related to multi-state/multi-jurisdiction tax withholding, garnishments, and key annual audits (e.g., 401 (k), workers compensations, external financial audit)
Design and implement scalable processes to enhance payroll operational efficiency while maintaining accuracy, including the design and implementation of internal control measures and periodic review of compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley
Prepare payroll reports for various internal departments such as Finance, Accounting, Legal, Equity and People Operations
Reconcile and validate 401(k)/Roth contributions and resolve discrepancies
Review W-2s, and ensure W-2s are issued accurately on time
Independently manage payroll accounting email inbox and respond to payroll-related questions promptly,effectively and accurately based on professional knowledge, investigation of issues and critical thinking of resolutions for reported matters
Maintain good recordkeeping practices and payroll files
Develop and implement standard operating procedures related to payroll accounting
Assist with other accounting and finance projects as needed
BS/BA degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
5+ Years of experience in a payroll function preferably in a fast-paced/ public company environment
Experience with multi-state Payrolls larger than 1,000 employees with both exempt and nonexempt employees
Detailed knowledge of payroll compliance and working knowledge of state/federal employment laws/regulations. Shift Differential experience preferred
Paylocity and NetSuite experience preferred
Ability to manage multiple tasks and take ownership of work products. Proven ability to meet multiple deadlines in a fast-growing environment with frequently changing priorities
Possess a tech-savvy mindset and passion for end-to-end design and improvement
Ability to work independently and as part of a team and take on new tasks with various levels of difficulty in a fast-paced environment
Must be proficient in the use of a spreadsheet (MS Excel and Google), word processing (MS Word and Google). Advanced Excel Skills preferred
