Role Description

You will have an in-depth domain knowledge and expertise in enterprise infrastructure platforms and systems design. This role will have extensive experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining complex IT infrastructure solutions with a strong focus on platform infrastructure and systems integration. This role will collaborate closely with lead engineers and architects in Infrastructure, Security, Cloud Platform, and Business Function to support new technology and develop new services to support Grainger globally. This role needs to bring a systems-thinking perspective, optimizing interaction patterns between capabilities within their specific domain and across domains with other Architects.

• Design and implement infrastructure solutions
• Partner with internal architects and engineers, as well as external partners across Infrastructure, Security, Cloud, and Business Function domains, to deliver scalable, resilient, and secure enterprise solutions
• Develop and execute automation strategies to streamline infrastructure provisioning and operations
• Architect and optimize platform infrastructure across cloud, compute, containers, storage, observability, and related shared services
• Ensure infrastructure solutions meet the performance, reliability, and security needs of mission-critical applications
• Support intake and onboarding of new technologies, ensuring alignment with enterprise infrastructure and platform standards
• Stay current with industry trends in cloud, platform engineering, infrastructure modernization, automation, and emerging technologies
• Document infrastructure and platform designs, processes, and operational procedures to support knowledge sharing and future scalability
• Prototype and test new technologies, driving innovation in infrastructure services that enhance agility and responsiveness
• Provide technical guidance to engineering teams during the implementation of infrastructure and platform solutions supporting Business Function initiatives

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required
• 7+ years Experience in infrastructure/platform engineering or architecture roles, with direct exposure to enterprise platform and shared infrastructure technologies preferred
• 7+ years Designing and maintaining enterprise-scale infrastructure and platform solutions supporting business-critical applications and services
• 7+ years Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), especially in hybrid or edge deployments
• 7+ years Experience with infrastructure platforms, automation, containers, observability, or related technologies in enterprise environments
• Strong background in one or more infrastructure technologies, including server and virtualization (e.g., Nutanix, VMWare, KVM), enterprise networking (e.g., Cisco, Juniper), cloud, containers, storage, or observability
• Familiarity with various platforms (e.g., SAP) and their infrastructure dependencies
• Familiarity with enterprise security and governance requirements for infrastructure platforms
• Experience designing and implementing enterprise observability and reliability solutions, including telemetry collection, service monitoring, distributed tracing, event correlation, and operational intelligence preferred
• Experience with modern observability platforms and standards such as OpenTelemetry, Datadog, Splunk, AppDynamics, CloudWatch, Prometheus/Grafana, or comparable technologies preferred
