[Hiring] Senior Engineering Manager, Platform @GiveDirectly [Private]

Role Description

We’re hiring three Senior Engineering Managers to own domains of our cash delivery platform at a moment of rapid growth:

• You'll own one domain of our cash delivery platform — payments, core platform, or data collection.
• Manage a team of 5–7 senior engineers, partner with product counterparts on roadmap and delivery.
• Own operational details (on-call, incident response) and pressure-test designs.
• Maintain and scale a strong engineering culture through recruiting and retaining high talent density teams.
• Set a high technical quality bar while giving a very senior team high autonomy.
• Optimize for recipient impact, focusing on building the hard tech that matters to recipients.
• Own the interface between engineering and team members unfamiliar with product development.

Qualifications

• Exceptional alignment with GiveDirectly Values and active demonstration of core competencies.
• Language Requirement: English.
• 3+ years managing software engineers through full delivery cycles.
• 8+ years of overall industry experience building production software, with a strong backend foundation.
• Demonstrated ability to recruit, coach, develop, and retain engineers.
• Track record of building a strong engineering culture.
• Strong technical judgment driven by the mission.
• Energized to build product-development fluency in a relatively new organization.

Requirements

• Must be based in one of the specified countries and overlap with East Africa Time and US Eastern Time by at least 3 hours.
• Must be able to travel ~3-4 times per year to one of our countries of operation for team retreats or field visits.

Benefits

• Base Salary: $181,130 (US), £124,370 (UK), $112,350 (Kenya).
• Bonus at Target Performance: 15% (~$27,170 for US, ~£18,656 for UK, ~ $16,853 for Kenya).
• Estimated Total Compensation at Target: $208,300+ (US), £143,026+ (UK), $129,203+ (Kenya).
• Annual Benefits Stipend: $21,393 (US), £2,760 (UK), $8,453 (Kenya).
• This role is fully remote, with salary benchmarks shared during the hiring process for other locations.
