Role Description

This position will be responsible for executing Protection and Control Engineering and Consulting services in Transmission, Distribution and Industrial markets in the US and Canada. Reporting through the Grid Automation North America Operations Director, the Power System Protection and Control Engineer will be part of the regional Projects and Services execution team. Activities will include:

  • Designing, programming, testing and commissioning protection and control related applications for power system design and substation automation projects.
  • Design and delivery of complex protection solutions for generation, transmission, distribution systems for electrical utilities and industrial clients.
  • Performing engineering studies and analyses such as:
    • Short circuit
    • Load flow
    • Ground grid design
    • Lightning protection studies
    • Insulation coordination
    • Arc-flash studies
    • Protective device coordination
  • Creating relay setting files to include programming of Protection and Control Elements, Control Logic and Communications settings for GE and third-party protective relays.
  • Testing customized Protection and Control solutions both in house and at customer installations.
  • Providing factory acceptance test plans and testing services to validate protection designs for customer witnessing.
  • Site acceptance test planning and field support up to and including commissioning of new applications.
  • Assisting software tool development to automate the engineering process internally and externally with key utility partners.
  • Participating in project meetings with project managers and customers on technical discussions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or higher degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
  • Five (5) years of experience in design, study, and analysis of electric power systems.
  • Must hold or be eligible to obtain a Professional Engineer license in at least one state.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of power system steady and transient analysis, fault study and protection theory.
  • Familiar with symmetrical components.
  • Willing to work with the rest of the team to review and stamp engineering drawings and studies as needed and with proper training and supervision.
  • Willing to represent the company and apply for permits to conduct engineering services as needed.
  • Working experience with study software and power system tools such as Mathcad, MATLAB, ASPEN, CAPE, SKM, CDEGS, WinIGS, or ETAP.
  • Working knowledge on substation communication protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP, Modbus.
  • Knowledge or field experience with system commissioning and testing including Doble / Omicron test equipment or similar.
  • Ethical and professional business manner in interaction with team members and customers.
  • Technical skills to execute projects, identify opportunities, and write SOW proposals.
  • Strong communication skills including technical writing and presentations.
  • Strong learning skills, demonstrated team player and customer focused.
  • Professional engineering accreditation is not essential but definitely would be an asset.
