Role Description

The Visiting Instructor provides specialized instruction for courses focusing on concepts for students. Student learning is the primary responsibility of WGU faculty. Visiting Instructors are subject matter experts who teach and support students. They offer specialized instruction on topics in their course(s) aligned with best practices, as well as monitor and support student progress in competency development. They are responsive to learner needs and vary the type, length, method, and intensity of instruction best matched to the learner’s strengths and goals. Using technology, Visiting Instructors may interact with students in both group and one-on-one settings. Instructors collaborate with other instructional and program faculty serving the students to ensure continuity and quality of support.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Provide specialized instruction on assigned topics aligned with course curriculum and best practices.
• Monitor the course progress of an assigned group of learners in their course(s) and proactively offer support at key points of the student journey.
• Provide expertise in assigned content area and maintain current knowledge in their field.
• Foster student learning through innovative, effective teaching practices.
• Use technology-based teaching and communication platforms to aid students in the development of competencies.
• Collaborate with other professionals within the university to promote a positive, student-obsessed atmosphere.
• Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to customize instructional support for learners with a variety of needs and educational backgrounds.
• Must demonstrate technological competency: Proficiency in Microsoft Office (or similar) applications, virtual instructional platforms, and student management systems.
• Extraordinary customer service orientation.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to present information clearly, concisely, and accurately; friendly, persuasive speaking and writing style.
• Communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds and situations.
• Well organized - conscientious and detail-oriented.
• Adapt to changing priorities within the workplace.
• Demonstrate initiative through independent completion of tasks.
• Ability to use data to make decisions.
• Strong understanding, acceptance, adherence, and promotion of the tenets of competency-based education in the WGU model.

Requirements

• Must maintain an active and unencumbered license to practice dietetics-nutrition in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
• Master’s degree in Nutrition and Dietetics/Nutritional Science, or Public Health in Nutrition, or Dietetics Administration. Education must be from an accredited institution. Education is verified.
• Higher education experience providing instruction support for 2 years.
• Industry experience for a minimum of 2 years.
• This position requires afternoon and evening hours, up to 10 hours a week.

Preferred Qualifications

• Doctorate or terminal degree in content area. Education must be from an accredited institution. Education is verified.
• Experience with distance education and distance learning students.

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Works primarily from home within the continental United States and is available to travel to meetings as required.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
• This position requires occasional travel of up to 20%, including required attendance at designated company summits (typically one to two per year).
• Additional travel may include conferences, visits to company locations, and other business-related events as needed.
• Additional travel may be assigned as needed to support business requirements.

Position & Application Details

This is a part-time, intermittent position (classified to work less than 30 SWH) that may be eligible for mental healthcare; retirement savings plan; wellbeing program; and prorated paid holidays and accrued sick time.
