Role Description

We invite applications from qualified adjunct faculty to teach graduate-level courses in the MSHQS (Master of Science in Healthcare Quality and Safety) program (online format). Adjunct faculty will engage in online instruction (asynchronous), assess and provide feedback to students, work with program leadership to ensure alignment with student learning outcomes and the overall program mission, and contribute to continuous program quality.

MUSC is a nationally-recognized academic health sciences center committed to excellence in teaching, research, and patient-care innovation. The MSHQS program prepares graduates for careers in healthcare quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, regulatory compliance, and other quality and safety-focused leadership roles in the healthcare industry.

The program is offered in an online format and emphasizes healthcare quality improvement methodologies, patient safety principles, data-driven quality measurement, regulatory compliance, and systems-based approaches to healthcare safety. The curriculum is designed to develop competent professionals who can lead quality and safety initiatives across diverse healthcare settings.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in Healthcare Administration/Management, Business Administration/Management (with at least 18 graduate credit hours in Healthcare Administration/Management), Health Services Management, Healthcare Quality and Safety, Public Health, or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience in a Healthcare Administration, Healthcare Quality and Safety, or related program in higher education.
  • At least 18 graduate semester hours in healthcare administration, healthcare quality, or related discipline.
  • Professional experience in healthcare quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, regulatory compliance, performance improvement, or related roles, and/or evidence of continuing professional development (certifications, publications, presentations, etc.) in the field.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D., DHA, or related) in Healthcare Quality and Safety, Healthcare Administration, or related field.
  • Experience teaching in online graduate programs (preferably in accelerated programs).
  • Demonstrated ability to use learning-management systems (e.g., Brightspace, Canvas, Blackboard), virtual classroom technologies, and engage adult learners.
  • Active participation in professional organizations such as AUPHA, ACHE, NAHQ, IHI, MGMA, or other relevant healthcare quality and safety associations.
  • Professional certifications such as CPHQ, CPPS, FACHE, Six Sigma (Green Belt, Black Belt), Lean certification, or equivalent.
  • Experience in healthcare quality improvement, patient safety, risk management, regulatory compliance (CMS, Joint Commission, etc.), performance improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, PDSA), root cause analysis, or quality measurement and reporting.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications or presentations in healthcare quality, patient safety, health services research, or related fields.
  • Ability to contribute to curriculum design, continuous improvement, and student mentorship.
  • Experience with competency-based education strategies and assessment methods.
  • Knowledge of quality improvement frameworks and methodologies (e.g., IHI Model for Improvement, Plan-Do-Study-Act, Lean, Six Sigma, High Reliability Organization principles).
  • Familiarity with healthcare quality and safety data analytics tools and quality measurement systems.
  • Understanding of regulatory standards and requirements (CMS Quality Programs, Joint Commission standards, NCQA, URAC, value-based care models).
