Role Description

Course number and title: Sessional Lecturer – LHA1114H - Commons, Community and Social Justice

Course description:

  • While our economic GDP is growing today via enclosure and destruction of the Commons, our human wellbeing and sustainability increasingly depend not only upon protection of the Commons (economic, ecological, cultural and electronic) but their extension in most areas of human experience.
  • The course will be based on introducing students to the following:
    • a history of Commons in societies;
    • conceptualization of Commons;
    • relevance of Commons for understanding adult education in relation to a variety of learning contexts and social issues.
  • The course will specifically seek to explore the following dynamics of change:
    • the current impact of 'counter-commons' market measures of wealth, well-being and 'development';
    • current commons-related education, policy and activism in economic, social, cultural and spiritual realms at the local, national and global levels;
    • theoretical and strategic debates among commoners and between commoners and corporate 'sharing economy.'

Estimated course enrolment: 25 students

Class schedule (Lectures): Tuesday 17:00 - 20:00 Online Synchronous

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026

Qualifications

  • Candidates must hold a doctorate in Adult Education or a related field.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarship in the field of Adult Education and the subject area of the course.
  • Practical experience related to the topic of the course.
  • Successful post-secondary teaching experience in the subject area of the course.
  • Successful track record of teaching online, preferably using Canvas/Quercus.

Requirements

  • Prepare, organize, and lead this graduate half course.
  • Be available to students seeking assistance between classes.
  • Evaluate student work and provide students with feedback.

    • $11,030.36 - Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term
