Role Description

We would like to welcome interested applicants to apply for our Mental Health and Addictions program (MHA) instructor opportunity. Instructors at FNTI plan, facilitate, and assess curriculum delivered through a variety of instructional models and locations. Faculty are contracted for each delivery session, which includes planning, professional development, instructional delivery, and the assessment and evaluation of student learning and grading.

Under the direction of the Dean, Partner College and University Programs, faculty play a key role in teaching and knowledge dissemination, providing cultural support to learners, and contributing to administration, coordination, research, and community engagement.

In carrying out these responsibilities, faculty are committed to ensuring that Indigenous Knowledge and Indigenous ways of knowing and being are prioritized in program development and delivery, while supporting the strategic priorities of the Institute and adhering to the Values, Mission, and Vision of FNTI.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare, instruct, and deliver courses in a cultural framework, while adhering to FNTI’s “braided healing with learning” approach.
  • Incorporate Indigenous knowledges, ways of knowing/being, and Indigenous worldview and ensure quality assurance while planning and developing appropriate lessons, teachings and practices for classroom facilitation/conversations and methodologies to address the learning outcomes.
  • Provide academic and cultural supports to learners, while evaluating learner progress/achievement.
  • Support all learning outcomes (vocational, course and Indigenous) and design appropriate teaching methodologies for meeting those learning outcomes.
  • Support the strategic priorities of the institute while adhering to the Values, Mission and Vision Statement.
  • Provide support and mentorship to learners outside of the scheduled class times as required.
  • Facilitate space for inclusion of medicines and traditional healing practices to our learners during each course.
  • Collaborate with the Cultural Advisor to provide ceremonies, traditional teachings that are appropriate to meeting the Indigenous learning outcomes and ensure the cultural framework is followed (opening and closings, smudging, circles, drumming and singing and cultural practices).
  • Ensure Indigenous Pedagogy and Andragogy practices are implemented, and Adult Learning Principles are followed in the classroom wherever possible.
  • Attend training, seminars and meetings as required.

Qualifications

  • A combination of Indigenous knowledge and teachings, training and experience which FNTI deems to be appropriate to the role, or a Degree or diploma in a relevant field and at least three years teaching in a postsecondary environment and experience working with Indigenous learners and communities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the history of Indigenous peoples and communities.
  • Experience in delivering high quality teaching and curriculum development at the postsecondary level or equivalent education and experience as a practitioner in a related field.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to perform in a complex, fast paced environment while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Ability to act as the leader in the classroom.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research as part of storyboard development.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and successfully with Indigenous communities and organizations.
  • Ability to build effective relationships in a cross-cultural setting, specifically as it relates to Indigenous cultures.
  • Committed to Indigenous self-determination and educational equity.
  • Collaborative, flexible, and culturally respectful.

Requirements

  • Willing and able to travel occasionally and work overtime as required.
  • Successful candidates must provide a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Ontario, Canada.
