Role Description

The Behavior Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting student success at our asynchronous virtual school. This position focuses on implementing evidence-based behavioral interventions, supporting students with diverse social-emotional needs, and collaborating with educators, families, and support staff to foster an inclusive learning environment. The ideal candidate is passionate about student well-being, adept at virtual engagement, and committed to fostering a supportive educational community.

  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized behavior intervention plans (BIPs) for students requiring behavioral support.
  • Run small groups or individually focusing on behavior goals. Provides progress monitoring on a regular basis to families and the SPED team.
  • Provide direct support and consultation to teachers, staff, and families to address student behavior concerns in a virtual learning environment.
  • Collaborate with special education teams, school counselors, teachers, and administrators.
  • Provide training and resources for staff and families on behavior management, de-escalation techniques, and positive reinforcement strategies in virtual settings.
  • Participate in virtual special education eligibility, evaluation planning, Individualized Education Program (IEP) and 504 meetings as needed to provide behavioral expertise and recommendations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and reports related to student progress, interventions, and compliance with state and federal regulations.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Special Education, Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Social Work, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working with students with behavioral needs, preferably in an online or alternative education setting.
  • Experience conducting Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and implementing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
  • Proficiency in virtual learning platforms, digital communication tools, and online data tracking systems.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to engage with students, staff, and families in a virtual setting.
  • Ability to design and implement effective behavior intervention plans and support strategies.
  • Proficiency in collecting, analyzing, and utilizing data for decision-making and progress monitoring.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a remote environment.
  • Deep understanding of behavioral principles, functional behavior assessments, and intervention strategies.
  • Knowledge of special education laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504.
  • Familiarity with social-emotional learning frameworks and trauma-informed care principles.
  • Awareness of equity and inclusion practices in behavioral support and education.
  • Understanding of online learning environments and best practices for engaging students in virtual settings.
  • Ability to build positive relationships and provide compassionate support to students and families.
  • Capacity to adapt interventions and strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a remote team.
  • Skill in navigating and utilizing virtual learning tools and communication platforms.
  • Ability to provide professional development and training to staff and families.

Benefits

  • Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
  • Travels to monthly staff meetings, twice annually to all staff meetings somewhere in Oregon, for a 3 day period, one time for new staff training, and local student center for professional meetings as required.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

The behavior specialist works from their home office and/or their student center. The work environment is often controlled and quiet, but will also frequently include moderate to loud noise. The work environment may include exposure to unpleasant interior temperatures, dirt, communicable diseases, and distraught or difficult individuals. The work requires regular focus on a computer screen and precise control of fingers and hand movements. Bending, stooping, kneeling and lifting up to 20 pounds and may also be required on occasion.
