Role Description

The Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences is creating an environment that affirms community across all dimensions. This is a 9 month tenure-accruing position that will be 30% teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) and 70% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit.

Duties will include:

  • Developing active, successful, nationally recognized research and teaching programs in remote sensing technologies.
  • Creating theoretical/foundational algorithms in remote sensing and/or sensor development utilizing a variety of sensors.
  • Applications may include satellite-based spatio-temporal remote sensing in soil and plant nutrients/organic matter, ecosystem health, natural hazards, land use/cover changes, and water quality.
  • Complementing existing remote sensing expertise in Unmanned Airborne Systems (UAS) and precision agriculture.
  • Developing an undergraduate course in remote sensing techniques or sensor development for wider, non-engineering students.
  • Creating a graduate-level course derived from the candidate’s research expertise.
  • Establishing a strong, externally funded research program and developing active collaborations with other faculty and research partners.
  • Promoting research activity and leadership in professional societies, supported by sustained publication activity in top scientific journals.
  • Participating in all activities of departmental academic life, including research groups, mentorship of students, and academic service activities.
  • Engaging in Extension activities in their program area.
  • Engaging in scholarly activities related to instruction, including teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, advising and mentoring students, and participating in curriculum revision.
  • Supporting and participating in the CALS Honors Program, distance education, and international education.

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
  • Strong background in remote sensing analysis and modeling of complex environmental systems.
  • Experience in remote sensing sensors, applications, and/or theory leveraging multiple sensor platforms.
  • Experience developing or using Artificial Intelligence and other analysis methods.
  • Demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding.
  • Supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system.
  • Commitment to UF core values.

Requirements

  • Postdoctoral experience and a clearly established publication record in areas related to this position are desired.

Company Description

The Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department is a unit in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS) at the University of Florida and has a variety of teaching, research, and extension education programs. The Department is comprised of 34 faculty members located on the Gainesville campus, 6 faculty located across the state at research and education centers, 7 courtesy faculty, and 20 support personnel.
