[Hiring] Staff Data Scientist @Alpaca

Role Description

We're looking for a Staff Data Scientist, Growth to define and own how Alpaca measures and grows across the entire customer journey—from acquisition and activation to retention and monetization. As the most senior individual contributor for growth data, you'll set the technical direction and the North Star for growth, stand up the experimentation and metrics platform the company builds on, and work through Product, Marketing, Sales, and Engineering to decide what moves the needle. This is a greenfield charter: you'll define the problems worth solving, not just execute a roadmap.

This role is ideal for someone who thinks in funnels, loops, and cohorts, loves experimentation and causal inference, and wants meaningful ownership over how data drives growth at a fast-growing, global brokerage-infrastructure company. You'll connect product behavior, marketing spend, and lifecycle engagement into a coherent growth model—and, as we build a more agentic Alpaca, help make growth analytics self-serve for the whole company.

What You'll Do

• Own the growth funnel end-to-end.
• Analyze acquisition, activation, retention, referral, and monetization across the full user journey; find and size the highest-leverage opportunities to grow the business.
• Run the growth experimentation engine.
• Design and execute A/B tests and causal/incrementality studies on onboarding, activation nudges, funding conversion, pricing, lifecycle/CRM campaigns, and referral loops—building the guardrails, metrics, and self-serve tooling that let teams experiment with rigor and velocity.
• Model growth.
• Build retention/cohort analyses, churn and LTV models, CAC/payback and unit-economics views, and forecasts of core growth metrics; identify the compounding levers and growth loops worth investing in.
• Measure what marketing and partnerships actually drive.
• Use attribution, incrementality testing, and channel/marketing-mix analysis to guide acquisition spend, CAC, and payback.
• Define the growth metrics that matter.
• Define and maintain activation, retention, engagement, and monetization metrics and a clear North Star; partner with analytics engineering to build governed, scalable metrics and dashboards teams rely on daily.
• Embed cross-functionally.
• Partner closely with Product, Marketing, Sales, Engineering, and Finance to shape strategy and turn insight into roadmap, campaigns, and go-to-market decisions.
• Turn data into narrative.
• Create compelling visualizations and narratives to communicate growth insights and recommendations to cross-functional partners and senior leadership.
• Enable self-serve and agentic analytics.
• Help operationalize growth analytics—moving ad-hoc requests into intuitive self-serve environments and contributing to text-to-analytics on top of our semantic layer.
• Mentor and set standards.
• Mentor other data scientists and analysts, contribute to best practices, and help foster a data-informed growth culture across the organization.

Qualifications

• Proven expertise in growth and/or product analytics and data science, with a strong background in statistical analysis and experimentation.
• Hands-on experience with growth/funnel analytics—acquisition, activation, retention/churn, LTV/CAC, cohort analysis, and lifecycle/CRM analytics.
• Experience designing and building experimentation tooling and frameworks for trustworthy A/B tests and causal-inference / incrementality analyses.
• Familiarity with marketing measurement—attribution, incrementality, or marketing-mix modeling—a strong plus.
