Role Description

MaineGeneral Health is seeking an experienced Oncology Data Specialist to support the collection, analysis, and reporting of cancer data that drives quality patient care, accreditation, clinical research, and organizational decision-making. In this role, you'll play a vital part in maintaining the integrity of our cancer registry while ensuring compliance with state and national reporting standards.

This is a fully remote position. Preference will be given to candidates residing in Maine or the New England region who can participate in occasional in-person team meetings, professional development opportunities, and collaborative events throughout the year.

Qualifications

  • Certification as an Oncology Data Specialist (ODS-C) is required.
  • Three to five years of experience in oncology data abstraction, cancer registry, health information management, or a related healthcare data role preferred.
  • Experience with NeuralFrame by KACI, EMR's: SCM, Touchworks, Aria, Meditech, EPIC, and HealthInfoNet preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of oncology terminology, cancer staging methodologies, treatment modalities, and national cancer registry standards.
  • Experience submitting data to state and national cancer registries, including compliance with American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer and National Cancer Database (NCDB) reporting requirements.
  • Strong analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to data accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and reporting deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across clinical and administrative teams.

Requirements

  • Identify, analyze, and maintain accurate data related to the history, diagnosis, treatment, disease status, and survival outcomes of cancer patients treated throughout the organization.
  • Abstract medical records in accordance with national cancer registry standards, ensuring complete, timely, and accurate documentation.
  • Prepare statistical reports and analyses related to incidence, treatment outcomes, mortality, demographic trends, and other cancer program quality metrics.
  • Collect, validate, and report data to support protocol studies, patient care evaluations, quality improvement initiatives, committee activities, and multidisciplinary cancer conferences.
  • Assist clinical departments with quality audits, data validation, reporting requests, and registry-related initiatives.
  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of all required reports, including National Cancer Database (NCDB), State Cancer Registry, and American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer reporting requirements.
  • Serve as a subject matter resource regarding cancer registry standards, department policies, reporting requirements, and oncology data best practices.
  • Maintain the highest standards of data integrity, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance while supporting continuous improvement across the cancer program.
