[Hiring] Informatics Specialist @UCSF

Role Description

The California Department of Public Health Center for Infectious Diseases Informatics Branch (IB) is recruiting for an Informatics Specialist II to join an exciting team developing innovative solutions to strengthen CDPH’s public health data ecosystem. The incumbent will join the team leading the design and implementation of disease prevention and control activities related to reportable communicable diseases. Responsibilities will include the following:

• Learning and applying professional public health informatics concepts to projects of intermediate scope and complexity.
• Participating in project teams to develop innovative informatics and public health data collection, management, and analysis systems.
• Implementing strategies for improving existing public health surveillance data systems and infrastructure.
• Conducting data analysis, data quality assurance, and quality improvement projects.
• Contributing to the development and maintenance of monitoring systems and processes.
• Developing protocols and guidelines and providing information and technical assistance to support local health jurisdictions, community-based organizations, clinical, and other program partners.
• Collaborating with epidemiologists, informaticists, and data analysts.
• Programming (R, SQL, and/or Python) and/or informatics knowledge to support data analysis and data quality assurance projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in public health, health care information technology, computer science, or related area, and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.
• Minimum 1+ years of directly relevant experience.
• Intermediate skills in data analysis, database management, and systems programming, including SQL, Python, and/or R.
• Working knowledge of all relevant clinical or public health informatics software and systems.
• Broadly encompassing or in-depth knowledge of clinical, health systems, health analytics, or public health informatics.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Detail oriented, with demonstrated organizational skills.
• Demonstrated interpersonal and customer-service skills.
• Ability to work with senior staff and managers in information technology, health care management, and business analytics.
• Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
• Strong ability to communicate complex information clearly.
• Ability to run queries, and to collect, analyze, and interpret relevant data.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in public health, health care information technology, computer science, or related area, and/or equivalent combination of experience/training (preferred).
• Working knowledge of departmental systems and protocols for documentation and reporting (preferred).
• Public health domain knowledge (preferred).
• Strong ability to think creatively to recommend action steps or strategize solutions (preferred).
• Demonstrated proficiency relating to logical data design, data warehouse design, data integration, and data modeling (preferred).
