Role Description

The American Camp Association (ACA) seeks a Senior Vice President of Communications to lead the organization's communications strategy across all stakeholder groups. This executive will unify ACA's voice, sharpen its value propositions, and ensure that the right messages reach the right audiences with clarity and impact—driving engagement, action, and organizational growth.

The SVP of Communications is a senior member of the executive leadership team, reporting to the COO and advising the Board. This role leads a team of direct reports and manages ACA's external agency partners in marketing and public relations, providing strategic direction while holding those relationships accountable to organizational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Communications Leadership
    • Own ACA's overall communications strategy for all stakeholder groups.
    • Develop and execute a comprehensive, integrated communications strategy.
    • Lead long-term brand positioning and messaging frameworks.
    • Build and maintain audience profiles for key stakeholder groups.
    • Oversee strategic vision for communication and marketing.
    • Create and refine a clear tone and voice for the organization.
    • Serve as the strategic advisor to the CEO, executive team, and Board of Directors.
  • Member and Stakeholder Communications
    • Ensure communications drive engagement among members, volunteers, and stakeholders.
    • Lead communications to current members promoting ACA programs and events.
    • Develop targeted communications strategies for various stakeholders.
    • Build frameworks supporting volunteer communicators.
    • Partner with ACA Development on donor communications and fundraising campaigns.
    • Foster cross-departmental collaboration for consistent messaging.
  • External Agency and Partner Management
    • Provide strategic direction to ACA's external partners.
    • Direct ACA's marketing agency partner on strategy and campaigns.
    • Direct ACA's PR agency partner on media relations and storytelling.
    • Manage relationships with outside agencies and vendors.
    • Cultivate relationships with reporters and influencers in relevant spaces.
  • Measurement and Organizational Accountability
    • Drive quantitative and qualitative disciplines to communications.
    • Propose, monitor, and meet marketing and communications measurement objectives.
    • Extract insights from research and performance data.
    • Monitor emerging issues affecting camps and nonprofit organizations.
    • Maintain an informed point of view on ethical AI use in marketing.
  • Team Leadership and Operations
    • Provide strategic direction and support to direct reports.
    • Collaborate with team leaders to manage budgets and forecasts.
    • Design and implement standard operating procedures.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience required; Master’s preferred.
  • 12+ years of professional experience in communications, marketing, or public relations.
  • Proven ability to develop and execute communications strategies.
  • Strong track record of quantitative and qualitative results.
  • Experience managing external agency and vendor relationships.
  • Experience leading a cross-discipline marketing and communications team.
  • Polished communicator and strong writer.
  • Passion for youth development and the mission of ACA.
  • Camp or youth development experience is a plus.
