Role Description

The Communications Unit supports WFP India’s mission to raise awareness, mobilize support, and sustain partnerships for food security and nutrition. This internship will support the Digital Communications Associate in planning, producing, monitoring and reporting on WFP India’s digital engagement across Twitter (X), YouTube and Instagram. The role is designed to build practical skills in digital humanitarian communications while contributing to WFP’s outreach for country-level programmes and UN-led events.

Scope of Work

• Assist the Digital Communications Associate in day-to-day management of WFP India’s social media channels: Twitter (X), Instagram and YouTube (channel support, upload processes, metadata, thumbnails, captions, and scheduling).
• Map and maintain a rolling social media calendar (daily/weekly/monthly) that aligns with WFP programme milestones, global observances (e.g., World Food Day), and UN/WFP campaigns.
• Research regional and global food security issues, trends and data to inform posts, thread ideas, short scripts for video shorts, and content briefs.
• Draft social media copy, image/text post briefs, and short-form video scripts (30–90 seconds) for review and scheduling.
• Prepare and produce basic social assets where needed (captioned clips, infographic templates, story-sized graphics) using approved WFP templates and brand guidelines.
• Generate weekly and monthly social media impact reports, including metrics (reach, impressions, engagement rate, video views, follower growth), qualitative takeaways, and recommendations for optimisation.
• Monitor channel activity, surface trending conversations and potential engagement opportunities, and flag risks (e.g., misinformation, sensitive content) to the supervisor.
• Support communications planning and delivery for UN and WFP events in India (briefing notes, social media playbooks, live coverage coordination, asset gathering, and post-event reporting).
• Coordinate with programme, operations and policy colleagues to source human-interest material, beneficiary stories, expert quotes and visual assets for social content.
• Document lessons learned and compile a handover pack with content calendars, asset lists and reporting templates at the end of the internship.

Specific Deliverables

• A maintained and updated social media calendar covering Oct–Dec 2026 (editable format: Google Sheet/Excel) with post ideas, owners, asset requirements and proposed post times.
• At least 12 post drafts (combined across Twitter/X, Instagram and YouTube short scripts) that can be published following review.
• Three short-form video scripts and one fully edited short video (30–90 seconds) suitable for social platforms, produced using WFP-approved assets and brand rules.
• Weekly social highlights (one-page summary) and a comprehensive end-of-internship impact report summarising analytics, top-performing content, audience insights, and recommendations.
• A research brief (2–3 pages) on one chosen topic of relevance to regional/global food security (e.g., supply-chain chokepoints and food prices, conflict-driven food access, climate shocks affecting rice/wheat markets) with suggested comms angles.
• Support materials for at least one UN/WFP event during the internship (social playbook, live coverage plan, and post-event report).
• Final handover package including calendar, content bank, asset inventory, login/process notes (per WFP security policy) and recommended next steps.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in or recently graduated (within 12 months) from a university programme in Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Development Studies or a related field.
• Demonstrated interest in humanitarian/development communications, food security, or related policy areas.
• Familiarity with social media platforms (Twitter/X, Instagram, YouTube) and analytics tools (Twitter Analytics, YouTube Studio, Instagram Insights, CrowdTangle, Hootsuite/Buffer or equivalent).
• Basic multimedia skills: copywriting, captioning, simple video editing (e.g., Adobe Premiere Rush, CapCut, or equivalent), and image editing (Canva, Photoshop or equivalent).
• Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to summarise technical material into clear, audience-appropriate social content.
• Excellent written and spoken English; knowledge of Hindi or other regional languages is an asset.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multicultural environment and adhere to UN/WFP values and security guidelines.

Requirements

• Previous internship or professional experience in communications for NGOs, UN agencies, or media (desirable but not mandatory).
• Experience with social listening tools and basic data visualisation (Google Data Studio, Excel pivot tables) (desirable but not mandatory).
• Understanding of humanitarian access, international humanitarian law and WFP programming is an advantage (desirable but not mandatory).
