Role Description

The Director of Communications is Black Onyx Management's primary communications leader responsible for driving brand visibility, community engagement, and digital growth in support of the firm's mission to empower underserved communities. This is an execution-focused role that translates the firm's story into compelling content, strategic outreach, and meaningful community relationships. This position plays a central role in the firm's continued growth by managing social media, directing community engagement efforts, supporting business development, and ensuring consistent internal and external messaging. The Director of Communications reports directly to the CEO and COO and collaborates cross-functionally with service line leaders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Affairs, or a related field
• 3–5 years of experience in communications, media, public relations, or a closely related field
• Exceptional storytelling, writing, and content creation skills across platforms and audiences
• Proficiency in social media management tools, scheduling platforms, and digital analytics
• Proven experience with community outreach and relationship-building across diverse populations
• Self-starter with strong project management ability in a lean, fast-paced environment
• Commitment to equity, inclusion, and community-centered work
• Willingness to attend evening and weekend community events as required

Requirements

• Background in journalism, broadcast media, or news production (preferred)
• Existing relationships with regional and national media contacts (preferred)
• Experience with CRM systems, email marketing platforms, and newsletter tools (preferred)
• Familiarity with nonprofit, government, or civic sector communications (preferred)
