Role Description
Build AI-powered solutions for real eCommerce businesses - and ship them in days. Saucal is looking for an AI-Native Product Engineer who combines strong software engineering skills with hands-on experience in WooCommerce or eCommerce and the confidence to work directly with customers.
This is not a role where you receive a specification, disappear for several weeks, and return with finished code. You’ll speak with customers, understand how their businesses actually operate, identify the problem that needs solving, rapidly prototype a solution, and ship working features into production.
We’re looking for someone who already works AI-first. You use AI every day to explore ideas, research unfamiliar problems, write and review code, debug, test, automate repetitive work, and move faster. We should not need to convince you to work this way.
What You’ll Work On
-
Work directly with eCommerce businesses to understand their operational and technical challenges and turn those challenges into working software.
-
Depending on the problem, that might mean:
-
Building an AI-powered workflow
-
Creating or extending WooCommerce functionality
-
Connecting systems
-
Automating a previously manual process
-
Rapidly prototyping a completely new capability
-
Your work may include:
-
Working directly with customers to understand their business, workflows, pain points, and technical requirements.
-
Designing, prototyping, building, and deploying AI-enabled features and automations for real eCommerce use cases.
-
Building solutions around areas such as store operations, catalogue management, customer service, content, order processing, internal workflows, reporting, and integrations.
-
Extending WooCommerce and WordPress when custom functionality is required.
-
Integrating WooCommerce with third-party platforms, APIs, AI models, and other systems.
-
Using AI-assisted development tools to move rapidly from idea to prototype to production.
-
Experimenting with LLMs, prompting, tool use, structured outputs, retrieval, agents, and other emerging AI development patterns where appropriate.
-
Turning customer requirements into technical solutions without requiring lengthy specification documents or development cycles.
-
Testing ideas quickly, measuring whether they work, and iterating based on customer feedback.
-
Identifying opportunities to turn solutions developed for individual customers into reusable capabilities.
-
Troubleshooting and improving existing implementations when problems arise.
-
Working with product managers, designers, QA engineers, and other developers to deliver useful, reliable solutions.
-
Reviewing code and contributing to Saucal’s engineering standards and practices.
How You’ll Work
-
We expect you to ship. A problem that can reasonably be solved in days should not take weeks or months because of unnecessary process or over-engineering.
-
You should also be comfortable working where the answer is not obvious. When you encounter something unfamiliar, your instinct should be to explore, prototype, test, and figure it out rather than wait for a proven path or assume it cannot be done.
-
You should be comfortable starting with an imperfect first version, putting it in front of the customer, learning from the result, and improving it quickly.
-
At the same time, moving quickly does not mean ignoring engineering quality. Solutions going into production still need appropriate testing, monitoring, error handling, security considerations, and maintainable code.
-
You’ll be expected to make good decisions about when to prototype, when to iterate, and when something needs to be hardened for production.
What We’re Looking For
Must Have
-
An AI-native approach to software development - AI is already part of how you work every day.
-
Strong professional software development experience.
-
Experience building and shipping production software rather than working exclusively on prototypes or internal experiments.
-
Practical experience building features using LLMs or AI APIs.
-
Ability to rapidly prototype and turn an idea into a working solution.
-
Strong understanding of APIs, integrations, databases, and modern web application architecture.
-
Ability to work autonomously, make pragmatic technical decisions, and operate effectively with ambiguity.
-
Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
-
Hands-on WooCommerce experience or eCommerce development experience.
-
Excellent spoken and written English.
-
Strong customer-facing communication skills.
-
Confidence leading technical conversations with customers, asking good discovery questions, demonstrating solutions, and explaining technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
-
Ability to manage priorities and maintain a consistent working schedule in a remote environment.
-
A strong bias toward shipping, learning, and iterating.
Technical Experience
-
Your exact technical background can vary, but you should be comfortable working across enough of the stack to independently take a solution from idea to production.
-
Relevant experience may include:
-
PHP
-
JavaScript / TypeScript
-
React
-
WordPress
-
WooCommerce
-
MySQL or other relational databases
-
REST APIs and third-party integrations
-
Git and modern version-control workflows
-
Docker and local development environments
-
LLM APIs and AI SDKs
-
Prompt engineering
-
Tool/function calling
-
RAG and retrieval systems
-
Agentic workflows
-
AI evaluation and testing
-
AI-assisted development environments and coding tools
-
You do not need to be an expert in every technology listed above. We care more about whether you can understand a customer problem, choose the right tools, and get a useful solution running quickly.
Bonus Points
-
Experience in any of the following would be especially useful:
-
Deep WooCommerce or WordPress development experience.
-
Building WooCommerce extensions or integrations.
-
Shopify or other major eCommerce platforms.
-
Building and shipping LLM-powered products or features in production.
-
AI agents, orchestration frameworks, tool use, or automated workflows.
-
Evaluation frameworks for AI applications.
-
Solutions engineering.
-
Technical consulting.
-
Forward-deployed engineering.
-
Working directly with founders, operators, or eCommerce teams.
-
Building software in an agency, consulting, or client-services environment.
What Success Looks Like
-
Join a customer conversation and quickly understand the actual problem behind the request.
-
Turn that problem into a working prototype without waiting for weeks of documentation and planning.
-
Demonstrate the solution to the customer and explain how it works in clear, practical language.
-
Incorporate feedback and move quickly toward production.
-
Know when AI is the right tool - and when it isn’t.
-
Deliver features in days rather than weeks or months whenever the scope reasonably allows it.
-
Build solutions that solve the immediate customer problem while helping Saucal develop stronger capabilities for future customers.

This is a 100% remote, full-time position.
